Indie SaaS & digital products
Ideas, shipping fast, launching, pricing, solo distribution
Start with the playbook: indie-products — the rules that matter most, with links into these notes.
- Building distribution into the product — share loops, badges, leaderboards, guest hostsProduct-led distribution tactics from Geosports (53% of daily players share their score, 1M players in under a month, guest "hosts" with big followings), Marc Lou's Zenvoice badge on customer-facing pages, TrustMRR embeds and OG images, IndiePage's revenue leaderboard and sales bot — and why web-first, zero-friction products spread.
- Building in public — personal brand and live-coding streams for solo foundersHow Marc Lou built a 160k Twitter / 120k YouTube audience that became his
- Cold email outreach for a small B2B SaaSMarc Lou's no-budget cold email system that grew a $199/month SaaS to ~$80k — find owner names in review replies, track stages in a Gmail CRM (Streak), send a three-sentence email that asks only for a reply, follow up twice; 50% open, 10% reply.
- Customer calls at scale — Fastlane's 2,000 calls behind $69k MRRHow Fastlane (AI short-form video tool, $69k MRR two months after launch, self-reported) ran ~20 customer calls a week — an in-app "book a call for 7 extra days" button, Mom Test questions, silent screen-share usability tests, power-user interviews, AI notes in Notion fed to a Claude-built "customer intelligence" dashboard.
- DataFast case — 512 days from launch to $20k MRR, soloMarc Lou's day-by-day record of growing DataFast (web analytics joined with revenue) from $0 to $20k MRR in 512 days — a trust problem against incumbents fixed by repositioning on revenue attribution, shareable features (live globe, public dashboards, commit avatars) as the growth engine, a price doubling with grandfathering, and the infra and community mistakes along the way.
- Finding small-product ideas — build to find signal, scratch your own itch, ride a momentWhere the ideas behind Marc Lou's ~30 products and Starter Story case studies came from — personal pain (a $1.6k Stripe invoice fee → Zenvoice $15k), DMs asking for something you built for yourself, spin-offs of previous products, remixes of games you love, trends and timely conversations — plus Marc's quit rule of ~1,000 visitors.
- Free tools as marketing for a paid product ("engineering as marketing")How Marc Lou builds single-feature, no-signup free mini-apps that plug his paid products — LogoFast ($10k+ for his course), Visualize Habits (10k visitors in 24h, habits imported into the paid tracker) — with rules for ideas, naming, the "seamless plug" and the Reddit trick of hiding the promo.
- Launching on Hacker News (Show HN) and RedditMarc Lou's rules for Show HN posts ("Show HN: I made X that does outcome", tech vocabulary, no emoji, never ask for upvotes, engage before reposting) and for Reddit (side-project subreddits with a demo video, story-only posts in big subreddits) — 25k+ HN visitors and one 50k-visitor Reddit day.
- Marketing channels for a solo founder — Marc Lou's 11, ranked by cost and effortMarc Lou's map of the channels that drove traffic to his ~30 small SaaS and digital products (cold email, free tools, affiliates, Hacker News, cold calls, programmatic SEO, Meta ads, personal brand, Reddit, directories, YouTube live), with cost/effort/ROI, his traffic numbers, and which channel to pick when.
- Postiz case — going "agent-ready" and riding X Articles from $17k to $143k MRR in 4 monthsNevo's social scheduler Postiz took 1.5 years to reach ~$21k MRR, then grew ~$1k MRR a day to $143k (self-reported, Starter Story) after making it usable by AI agents (API + Markdown skill file listed in agent marketplaces), a user's 7.2M-view X Article driving ~700 trials/day, his own X Articles, paid quote-reposts — and churn fell from 26–28% to 13.7%.
- Pricing small products — one-time payment vs subscription (and other models)Price points and models from Marc Lou's portfolio and Starter Story founders — one-time licences ($9–$69) that he says out-sold $5–10/month subscriptions, lifetime-deal options, 30-day passes, credits, usage-based analytics, short-term alert passes (€5/week), sponsorship slots, ads + pro subs — and when a subscription is worth it.
- Product Hunt and launch directories for indie productsWhat a Product Hunt
- Programmatic and content SEO for indie productsMarc Lou's programmatic-SEO recipe (one head keyword + long-tail modifiers, one page template, data stuffed in, on-page basics, first backlinks, Search Console) behind 50k+ visitors, results from WorkbookPDF (~100 clicks/day) and ByeDispute (10 articles → 5–20 qualified clicks/day), and the 2026 warning that indie Google traffic is falling.
- Setting up an affiliate program for a SaaS or digital productMarc Lou's affiliate setup that earned $50k+ — only once the product sells, Rewardful + Stripe, a dedicated SEO page written for affiliates (earnings proof, calculator, brand assets), in-app recruiting at the end of the user journey, 30–50% commission, a branded-keyword ban and a 30–60-day payout hold against self-referral refunds.
- Shipping a small product fast with AI coding (Claude Code, Cursor)How solo and non-technical founders shipped in hours to days in 2025–26 — Geosports built by a non-coder with Claude in ~8 hours from a written spec, TrustMRR in under 24 hours with Cursor, Fastlane's stack on Claude Code Max — plus one-feature scope, deadlines (Ship or Die: 155 of ~200 shipped in 30 days) and when to stop adding features.
- TrustMRR case — 24-hour build, viral tweet, sponsor slots ($299 → $1,500/month), then a marketplaceMarc Lou's TrustMRR (verified Stripe revenue board) went from a reply to Pieter Levels' tweet to ~$20k in 2–3 days by selling 20 capped, rotating sponsor slots and raising the price from $299 to $699 to $1,500/month; by Sept 2026 it made ~$44k/month from sponsors, listing add-ons and a 3% acquisition fee.
- What successful indie product case studies have in common (2025–26)Cross-case comparison of Marc Lou's portfolio (TrustMRR, Zenvoice, DataFast, IndiePage…), Geosports ($40k/month in 3 months), Fastlane ($69k MRR in 2 months) and Postiz ($17k→$143k MRR in 4 months) — distribution designed in from day one, one simple core feature, timing on a live conversation or trend, years of prior reps, and doubling down on the first signal.
