DataFast case — 512 days from launch to $20k MRR, solo

Marc Lou's day-by-day record of growing DataFast (web analytics joined with revenue) from $0 to $20k MRR in 512 days — a trust problem against incumbents fixed by repositioning on revenue attribution, shareable features (live globe, public dashboards, commit avatars) as the growth engine, a price doubling with grandfathering, and the infra and community mistakes along the way.

DataFast case — 512 days to $20k MRR

TL;DR

  • Launched on X after two months of building with four users and no validation beyond “I’d use it”; goal $20k MRR, which Marc values at ~$1M (≈$250k/year × 4).
  • Early milestones were slow: first $9 on day 15, ~$1k MRR on day 110, ~$5k on day 331, $8k on day 371, $17k+ on day 477, $20k on day 512.
  • The early blocker was trust, not features: visitors compared a solo newcomer with big analytics tools and saw no reason to switch.
  • What finally moved MRR: features users screenshot and share, a narrower positioning (revenue attribution for frustrated Google Analytics users), rewritten copy, a second plan and doubled prices.
  • Budget for infra surprises: event tracking added ~4 GB/day, MongoDB bills, and an iframe widget that tripled billable page views.

Details

Launch (day 1–3). DataFast showed visitors, pages, countries and browsers next to payments, with revenue per visitor and per channel.12 The X launch got ~100 signups; 15 entered a card for a 14-day trial on day two, while bots hit the site with ~22,000 errors.3 His first plan was a public feedback board with upvotes, building the top requests and hoping for word of mouth.3

The trust problem (day 4). Visit-to-signup was low, so he asked on X why visitors didn’t sign up. Answer: they compared it with established analytics, and a solo newcomer earns less trust — no clear reason to switch. He went looking for a sharper angle (first AI business insights).45 The AI-insight idea failed: by ~day 88 results were “not worth sharing”, and he removed the feature around day 100 until he had more data.67

Building for a core. Overwhelmed by a 50-task Trello board, he aimed at ~100 users who return daily and love it, so he could test with them.8 A heavily requested custom-goals feature went almost unused because people couldn’t find it — shipping a request isn’t enough without discoverable UI.9

Trial mechanics. After the 14-day trial, non-converters get one more week before their analytics data is deleted, with an email at expiry and one a day before deletion — a nudge to decide and a database-cost saver.10 On day 19, revenue ($600) was almost double MRR ($350) because people bought yearly plans.11

Infra mistakes. Tracking every scroll and click added ~4 GB/day; a first MongoDB invoice of $289 and later bills he called a “massive tech debt”; compound indexes fixed dashboard speed.121314 An embeddable iframe widget, built ~80% with AI, loaded the DataFast site, which itself embedded a widget, so one page view became three billable Vercel views; he removed it and lost two weeks.1516 His “biggest customer” turned out to be a scam account.13

What drove growth. A real-time globe of visitors (day 165), shareable public dashboards (day 265), and GitHub commits overlaid on the chart — avatars people screenshot.171819 By day 477 he says users post screenshots almost daily and “do marketing for me”; his job is features good enough to share.19 Cross-promotion: CodeFast/ShipFast buyers got a DataFast discount.7

Positioning and price. Around day 331 he targeted a painful segment of Google Analytics users and made revenue attribution the core positioning, rewrote the site copy (where he was losing people) and simplified onboarding.2021 On day 371 he doubled prices, kept existing customers on the old price, and changed the headline; a second plan followed.19

Morale. Around six months in, he nearly quit. A public spat (publicly praising a private security reporter he’d paid $300, then viral posts about bypassing his older products’ paywalls and hundreds of hack attempts a minute) cost him about a week of work and a break.222324 At $20k he set a new goal: $1M ARR (~$83k MRR).25

Disagreements / caveats

  • Self-reported, one founder with a large X audience; launch traction came from that audience.
  • Marc says he grew it “without traditional marketing”, but cross-selling to his course and boilerplate buyers is distribution most founders lack.25
  • He notes in the description that he regrets some things said on camera; treat the drama segments as context, not advice.
