Building in public — personal brand and live-coding streams for solo founders

How Marc Lou built a 160k Twitter / 120k YouTube audience that became his

Building in public — personal brand and live coding

TL;DR

  • A personal brand costs time, not money, and has the highest long-run ROI in Marc Lou’s experience: Twitter is his #2 traffic source after direct.
  • Pick the platform that suits how you express yourself (text → X, photos → Instagram, short video → TikTok/Shorts).
  • Build the whole profile around one unique trait (Marc: “the guy who ships lots of startups”).
  • Post three kinds of content, one outcome per post: behind the scenes, results (Stripe screenshots), learnings. Borrow proven post templates.
  • Live-stream yourself building: viewers trust you, so they buy before launch.
  • An audience helps but is not required — Geosports’ 4M-follower founder traces only ~2% of traffic to his own posts.

Results. Marc grew Twitter to ~160k followers in three years and YouTube to ~120k in about a year, bringing tens of thousands of visitors; excluding direct traffic, Twitter is the second biggest source for his startups.1 His first habit-tracker users (10–50) came from posting screenshots of the app on Twitter, then from fun promo videos (a World of Warcraft–style parody starring him and his wife).2 By 2026 TrustMRR had 200k+ monthly unique visitors, spread by sharing everything he builds on Twitter and people re-sharing on Reddit.3

Marc’s playbook.145

  1. Choose your favourite platform — he barely posts on Instagram because he doesn’t enjoy photos.
  2. Find a unique personality trait, even a “weakness” (his inability to focus became “ships many startups”), and match bio, banner, picture and writing style to it.
  3. With zero followers, consume first: follow creators you admire, learn the codes and language.
  4. Create: behind the scenes (“today I did this”), results (first customer + Stripe screenshot), learnings. Ask which outcome each post serves.
  5. Use templates from posts that worked for others and add your signature.
  6. It takes a long time, and people need cool things you build to follow you.

Live coding on YouTube. Marc streamed the entire 9-day build of Zenvoice (coding, design, marketing, bugs); YouTube pushed the streams to developers and a batch of customers bought before launch because they could see who was behind the product.67 Tips: frame streams as a challenge (“Day 1 of growing a software to $1M”), make a clear thumbnail (code background, Next.js/Stripe icons, an odd emotion); side benefits are forced focus and viewers helping with bugs and design. One 3-hour stream got ~50k views when his channel was new.89

Day-by-day documentary. For DataFast he filmed short “Day N of growing a software to $1M” clips for 512 days and cut them into one video, including setbacks and near-quitting — the same challenge frame as his streams.10 See DataFast case — 512 days from launch to $20k MRR, solo.

Meetups. In 2026 an audience converts into IRL events fast: ~350 registered for a Shanghai meetup announced a day or two earlier, and 200+ signed up in one day in Singapore.1112

Counterpoint — distribution in the product. Frank (Geosports, 4M followers as a sports creator) says his daily X post and Instagram story drive ~2,000 clicks — ~2% of traffic; 98% is word of mouth from people who don’t know he’s the founder. He still recommends building an audience, even a small one in public.13
