Programmatic and content SEO for indie products

Marc Lou's programmatic-SEO recipe (one head keyword + long-tail modifiers, one page template, data stuffed in, on-page basics, first backlinks, Search Console) behind 50k+ visitors, results from WorkbookPDF (~100 clicks/day) and ByeDispute (10 articles → 5–20 qualified clicks/day), and the 2026 warning that indie Google traffic is falling.

Programmatic and content SEO for indie products

TL;DR

  • pSEO = one page template × many long-tail keywords (location, level, language…) filled from a dataset.
  • Find a head keyword with volume and low difficulty in a free keyword tool (Ahrefs paid for detail), then list the modifiers.
  • Data: scrape it or hire a Fiverr freelancer to collect it.
  • Basics: keyword in H1, image alt text, titled links; first backlinks from Product Hunt and portfolio sites; submit URLs in Search Console.
  • Expect ~a month before traffic starts (Marc’s WorkbookPDF), then it compounds.
  • Content SEO fits “problem-aware” searches: ByeDispute’s 10 articles on Stripe disputes bring 5–20 qualified clicks a day.

Details

Marc Lou says pSEO drove 50,000+ visitors to some of his sites (recently ~100–200 a day each on three of them) at zero cost and medium effort, best for products with search intent.1

Recipe.23

  1. Pick a head keyword relevant to the business. His worked example: “rage room” — “rage room atlanta”, “rage room chicago” each have 1,000+ searches and low keyword difficulty.
  2. Find long-tail modifiers: cities, skill levels (beginner/advanced), languages.
  3. Build a page skeleton with variables. WorkbookPDF reuses one template for “Japanese workbook PDF”, “Ukrainian workbook PDF”, etc.
  4. Collect the data: hire someone on Fiverr to gather it or scrape it yourself.
  5. On-page SEO: alt attributes, titled links, keyword in H1.
  6. Backlinks: Product Hunt listing, IndiePage portfolio, other sites linking in.
  7. Ask Google to index key URLs in Search Console, then wait — WorkbookPDF took about a month to take off.

Results. WorkbookPDF ranks hundreds or thousands of pages (“English workbook PDF for intermediate”, “free workbook to learn Japanese”) and gets ~100 clicks a day, still growing — yet the product made only ~$2.4k, which Marc blames on channel fit: language learning is discovered on social, not search.45 ByeDispute used plain articles aimed at people already searching for Stripe-dispute help, which Marc thinks is how it gets most customers now.6

2026 warning. Jon Yongfook reported much less Google traffic, and Pieter Levels saw a trend of declining indie revenue and traffic, which he attributes to AI labs being able to recreate small tools. Marc says TrustMRR’s data shows median indie growth flat or falling.7

Disagreements / caveats

  • Traffic ≠ revenue: WorkbookPDF shows pSEO can rank a product whose buyers don’t search.
  • With AI answers eating clicks, consider tools/calculators that AI search cites (Free web tools (calculators) as SEO/AEO entry points into the quiz funnel) and AI-visibility tracking (Marc is building it into DataFast).8
  • Mass templated pages can be treated as thin content by Google; the source does not discuss quality thresholds.
