Pricing small products — one-time payment vs subscription (and other models)

Price points and models from Marc Lou's portfolio and Starter Story founders — one-time licences ($9–$69) that he says out-sold $5–10/month subscriptions, lifetime-deal options, 30-day passes, credits, usage-based analytics, short-term alert passes (€5/week), sponsorship slots, ads + pro subs — and when a subscription is worth it.

Pricing small products — one-time vs subscription

TL;DR

  • Marc Lou’s rule for small utilities: charge one-time if you won’t ship many updates and running costs are cents — he says he made far more than a $5–10/month plan would have.
  • Offer a lifetime option next to a cheap recurring plan (habit tracker $5/month or $47 lifetime; IndiePage $25/year or $45 lifetime).
  • Consumer (B2C) subscriptions for non-business users are hard to sell (Marc, 2025).
  • Subscriptions make sense when value recurs and you keep improving it: DataFast (usage-based from $9/month) hit $4k/day revenue — after ~2 years.
  • Match the price model to the job: time-boxed passes for bursty needs, credits for volume, sponsorship slots for audiences, ads for huge free usage.
  • Churn is the subscription killer; making the product do recurring work automatically cut Postiz’s churn from 26–28% to 13.7%.

Marc’s reasoning: Zenvoice costs him cents per month per customer but he still doesn’t charge recurring, because “subscriptions are really hard to sell”; for PoopUp he knew he wouldn’t push many updates, so recurring billing wasn’t justified.45

Shift to subscriptions. After repeated jibes that ShipFast (a $1M+ boilerplate, one-time) “isn’t software”, Marc focused on subscription products. DataFast reached $4,000 in a day for the first time in Aug 2026, after almost 2 years; TrustMRR took 7 months to reach steady revenue after a viral launch.78 On the way to $20k MRR, DataFast sold yearly plans early (revenue ~2× MRR by day 19), later doubled prices while grandfathering existing customers, and added a second plan — see DataFast case — 512 days from launch to $20k MRR, solo.910

Other models in the case studies.

Disagreements / caveats

  • This contradicts subscription-app advice elsewhere in the base (high anchored prices, recurring plans; Setting your first subscription price). The difference: Marc’s buyers are indie makers buying low-touch utilities via Stripe checkout, not consumers in an app store funnel.
  • Marc’s own later move to subscriptions suggests one-time pricing caps upside; his one-time products earned $7–15k each, while recurring DataFast and TrustMRR became his biggest businesses.
  • No controlled test of one-time vs subscription — all comparisons are Marc’s impressions.
