Product Hunt and launch directories for indie products

What a Product Hunt

Product Hunt and launch directories

TL;DR

  • A #1 Product Hunt day ≈ 2,000 visitors in 24 hours, plus ~2,000 more if the PH newsletter features you (Marc Lou’s estimate).
  • Side benefits outlast the traffic: a backlink, newsletter exposure and a badge that works as social proof.
  • Inbound votes: simple symbolic logo, a plain outcome name, a 60-character tagline about the user, not the product.
  • Outbound votes: ask friends/family; add a “We’re live on Product Hunt” banner linking to the listing on your own site.
  • Also list on Uneed and TinyLaunch (free, solo-run); for AI products, Futurepedia and There’s An AI For That (paid).
  • Get social proof before launching (IndiePage: famous early users first, then PH).

Details

Marc Lou has launched 20+ products on Product Hunt and won Product of the Year 2023.1 He treats directories as minimum-effort, high-ROI launch channels: each launch is a 24-hour competition for upvotes, and the winners take most of the traffic.1

Inbound upvotes (people browsing PH).2

  • Logo: do not pay hundreds for a pro logo; draw what it does (ByeDispute = a shield with a dollar sign).
  • Name: outcome-oriented and obvious (“ByeDispute” removes disputes). Clever abstract names are for VC-funded companies like Stripe.
  • Tagline (~60 characters on the home page): about the people — curiosity, inspiration or emotion — with the product taken out of the sentence. Developers usually get this wrong.

Outbound upvotes. Even 500 Instagram friends are a start; Marc used to ask his family every launch. Put a launch badge in the site header/footer during launch day so visitors can support you.23

Sequencing. For IndiePage Marc first put the product in the hands of well-known Twitter founders with 10k+ followers (Arvid, Damon and others) to get landing-page social proof, then launched on PH, got #1 of the day, and was picked up by newsletters and social media.45 For PoopUp, a low-maintenance one-time product, a directory launch was the only marketing.6

Backlinks. PH and portfolio sites like IndiePage give the first backlinks that pSEO needs (see Programmatic and content SEO for indie products).7

Disagreements / caveats

  • Visitor estimates are Marc’s from 2023–25 with an existing audience; PH traffic and ranking rules change often.
  • Asking friends for votes is common practice but PH discourages vote solicitation — keep it to “support us” rather than coordinated voting.
  • Launch spikes fade; Marc’s IndiePage revenue spiked when he marketed and fell when he moved on.8
