How long should a web2app quiz be?

Funnel length depends on how considered/emotional the purchase is — education, fitness and self-growth funnels run ~50 screens and 3–7 minutes, utilities stay short; plus why to keep UI conventional and logic simple.

How long should a web2app quiz be?

TL;DR

  • Long is fine — often better — when the purchase is emotional/considered: Headway’s funnel has ~50 screens and takes 3–7 minutes1.
  • People who make it through a long quiz are more likely to pay (Steve’s observation for education and fitness)2.
  • Utility apps (impulse, functional purchases) usually run short funnels2.
  • Length must come from engaging screens (feedback, rewards, social proof), not from bare data collection — and the paywall on the web should also be long34.
  • Keep the UI conventional and the logic simple; don’t invent new formats.

Details

Why long works. In psychology-driven categories the funnel has to warm the user up: make them feel their problem and engage them in a conversation where they feel heard. That takes many screens5. Steve and Igor counted ~50 screens in Headway’s flow; Steve’s wife found it too long, but completers convert better2. Igor’s rule of thumb from the same exchange: the less spontaneous the purchase, the longer the funnel; utilities are short2.

Short screens, many of them. One message and one question per screen keeps a long funnel easy6. Start with the simplest questions (age, gender) and escalate7.

Don’t reinvent the UI. Headway briefly ran a chatbot-style version of the same quiz; it vanished after ~a month, which Igor reads as a failed experiment — follow the proven card-by-card structure89.

Simple beats clever. Many fitness funnels compute BMI, ask for a target event and draw custom graphs; that suits fitness but isn’t needed everywhere — Headway’s funnel has none of that complexity9.

Long paywalls too. Steve: longer paywalls work better on the web (and mostly in-app) because they carry social proof and objection handling4.

Disagreements / caveats

  • No hard numbers on completion rate vs length were given; test length per category and traffic source.
