Finding and recruiting UGC creators for ecommerce ads
How the Smart Marketer agency sources UGC creators for paid ads at scale — a creator "roster" built like a portfolio, a "creative menu" of formats, direct hires vs JoinBrands vs TikTok Shop, nano-tier targeting, email outreach with a stated $150–400 rate and >90% response.
Finding and recruiting UGC creators for ecommerce ads
TL;DR
- Treat creators as paid-ad talent, not influencers: you want raw footage to cut into many ads, so follower count matters little.1
- Build a roster like an investment portfolio — creators from different niches, backgrounds and styles to reach different audience pockets.2
- Keep a “creative menu” of formats (scripted, unscripted testimonial, hook-only, static, animation) so one angle can be shot in many styles.3
- Source by direct hire (search Instagram/TikTok/Facebook by niche keywords) when you need raw files; use JoinBrands to move fast; TikTok Shop creators post to their own channels and may not hand over footage.45
- Target nano creators (<10K followers): cheaper, hungry, more yeses.6
- Outreach by email (from the bio/portfolio), not DMs: intro, brand + product link, the actual pay rate. Melvin gets replies >90% of the time.78

Who. Melvin Cotton III, creative operations manager at the Smart Marketer agency, interviewed by Molly Pittman (Aug 2026). His role — connecting strategists, editors, creators and clients — is one Molly says most teams lack; most of creative production is logistics.9
The system. Sourcing → vetting → brief (structure and content type) → asset management organised by hook, product and offer → performance feedback that informs the next brief.10
Creative menu. Categories include video-style assets (AI animation, GIFs, graphic videos), statics (carousels, graphic posts) and creator content: hook-focused (creator records supplied hooks), unscripted (testimonial-style ramble), fully scripted (verbatim). Pick the style per hypothesis from your research; the same hook/angle can then be produced across many formats for volume.3
- Direct hires (Smart Marketer’s default): search platforms with niche keywords (“dog products”, “leggings”), browse portfolios. Slow, but full control and raw files. They are building AI scraping to speed this up.
- Creator platforms (e.g. JoinBrands): browse a list, scale quickly — but you may only get the final edit, not raw files. Good early; outgrow it once you iterate on footage.
- TikTok Shop: send product + timeline; creators post on their own channels; footage access varies.
Tiers (as Melvin defines them): mega 1M+, macro ~50–100K, micro ~10–20K+, nano <10K. He mostly targets nano — good creators just starting out, reasonable fees, sometimes open to trade deals.6
Outreach email. Introduce yourself and the agency/brand, link the product, state a concrete pay rate (he benchmarks against SAG/industry rates: typically $150–300, up to ~$400 for very experienced creators). DMs look less legitimate; he used one only for a seasoned creator, still with website and product links.7 In 3.5 years he recalls only 2–3 projects with no response at all.8
Disagreements / caveats
- This is a paid-ad footage model (one-off fee, edited in-house). App-focused organic programs pay per post with view bonuses — see How to find, vet and pay UGC creators for an app (Nicole Cheung’s $10–30 base + CPM bonuses). Different goal, different economics.
- The >90% response rate comes from a trusted agency face with clear terms; brands cold-emailing may see less.
