Should you launch TikTok Shop? Readiness, timeline and costs
Ashley Wright's (Social Tale) view on TikTok Shop — get Meta and Google working first, commit 6+ months, expect a ~3-month cold start (affiliates take ~2 weeks to post), budget for samples, commissions and staff, judge on ROI not views; live shopping as the next phase.
Should you launch TikTok Shop?
TL;DR
- TikTok Shop is not plug-and-play: get Meta and Google performing first, then add it.1
- Commit at least 6 months; expect a ~3-month cold start.12
- Costs: product samples, affiliate commission, and an agency or in-house person.2
- Month 1 is mostly setup and affiliate outreach; affiliates have ~2 weeks to post, so content only lands in month 2.3
- Judge on ROI, not views — viral videos to the wrong audience don’t sell.4
- Best fit: brands already working elsewhere asking “how do we make it work”, not “will it work”.5
Details
Who. Ashley Wright, founder of TikTok Shop agency Social Tale (~85% US clients), interviewed at Smart Marketer Live, Dec 2025.
Why patience is the #1 mistake. Brands used to Meta or Amazon, where spend shows a return immediately, expect the same here; finance sees spend and no return in month one. TikTok Shop is a different game.36
Case — Dibi (hair/scalp serum): started May 2024, already strong on Meta, Amazon and retail; started slowly, then scaled to nearly $6M on TikTok Shop. When it works it “takes off like a rocket ship”.5 Social Tale now picks brands with budget and infrastructure — if you lack the budget or time, it won’t make sense.7
Where it’s going (Ashley’s prediction for 2026): more live shopping by brands and creators, possibly retail spaces turned into live-stream studios; shopping also moving into ChatGPT via its Shopify integration — be omnichannel.8 He also sees longer video ad formats starting to work.9
Disagreements / caveats
- Agency view: “commit 6 months and hire help” also suits the agency’s retention. No cost benchmarks (commission %, sample counts) were given.
- Agency sales total: the description says $80M+, the audio sounds like “18 million” — unverified.
- Creators on TikTok Shop post to their own channels; you may not get raw footage for paid ads (Finding and recruiting UGC creators for ecommerce ads).
- CTC’s Skullcandy case is more bullish. Taylor Holiday calls TikTok Shop the core demand-creation engine across Amazon and retail, not a later add-on. Indexed to January, Skullcandy’s TikTok Shop reached ~4.3x by August 2026, with its own ecommerce at 2.7x.10 CTC had just acquired a TikTok Shop agency, and Skullcandy is an established brand.
