How Meta ads strategy changes from $100 to $100,000 a month
Ben Heath's side-by-side of a $100/month and a $100K/month Meta account — structure (one ad set vs multiple campaigns + 10–30% testing), targeting (hands-off vs audience segments + value rules), testing (one test a month vs a creative "factory" of e.g. 12 ads/week), bidding (most conversions vs value / CRM-fed), scaling steps, measurement and team.
Meta strategy at $100 vs $100K a month
TL;DR
The core contrast, in Ben Heath‘s words: at $100 the job is to “get out of the algorithm’s way”; at $100K it’s to “feed the algorithm the best signal money can buy”.1
| $100/month (~$3/day) | $100K/month (~$3K/day) | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 1 campaign, 1 ad set, 1 offer, 1 ad2 | Campaigns per product range, offer or funnel stage; 10–30% of budget in separate testing campaigns3 |
| Mindset | protect the algorithm’s ability to learn | portfolio/risk manager, reallocating every few days4 |
| Targeting | broad; interests as suggestions only; no warm audiences1 | still broad, plus audience segments and value rules56 |
| Testing | ~1 meaningful test a month, one variable7 | test hooks, angles, formats, funnels, optimisation events; answers in days or hours78 |
| Creative | one good decision can make or break the month | a factory on a fixed weekly cadence910 |
| Bidding | maximise number of conversions | maximise value; CRM-fed lead values1112 |
| Scaling | tripling $3→$10/day is fine | even +20% in one go can be too much13 |
| Measurement | wait up to ~3 months for a verdict14 | near-real-time decisions, incremental attribution and tests, external tracking15 |
| Time and team | 1–2 hours/month in the account | media buyer, creative, partnerships and strategy roles1617 |
Details
Creative factory example. For one account: 12 new ads a week, made of 3 content types (client testimonials, influencer partnership ads, simple statics), aiming for 3–4 of each. Some $100K+ accounts in niche markets fatigue ads within days. Testimonial supply must be systematised, for example as part of post-purchase email or customer service, not an occasional ask.910
Why the testing split appears. At $100/month separate testing campaigns fragment too little data. At $100K most spend goes to proven winners, and a carved-out 10–30% finds the next ones at low risk.3
Paying for expertise. At this scale, spending ~5% of budget on better people, in-house or agency, nearly always improves results by more than 5%. The same logic applies to ~10% on creator partnership ads.17
What stays the same at any budget:
- a clear, compelling offer
- creative and audience that fit
- patience with learning
- running Meta ads as a managed system, not a slot machine
A common big-account failure is finding a winner and getting lazy about testing.18
Disagreements / caveats
- Separate testing campaigns. Ben uses them only at high spend. Dara Denney adds one at ~$30–50K/month (Meta creative testing setups at $5K, $50K and $1M+ per month). Jon Loomer argues against testing campaigns at low volume. Ben’s newer push delivery approach avoids extra campaigns entirely (Getting spend onto new Meta ads — push delivery vs the creative testing tool).
- These are Ben’s agency rules of thumb, not measured thresholds. The two ends are illustrative extremes.
