Coursiv's web2app funnel teardown
Walkthrough of Coursiv's (AI-learning app, ~$250k/month, web-only UA) ad-to-paywall flow — ad, people-photo hook, one-question screens, AI profile, goal and time commitment, timer paywall with personalised coupon and tripwire pricing.
Coursiv’s web2app funnel teardown
Steve P. Young’s walkthrough (video published July 2026; screenshots from ~July 2025). Coursiv (auto-captions say “Course Hero”) teaches AI tools and was making ~$250k/month; Steve has never seen one of its ads send traffic to the app store1.
TL;DR
- Ad and first screen tell the same story; the “28-day challenge” promise matches the 4-week plan sold on the paywall.
- People photos (resembling the target buyer) beat illustrations; social proof right at the top.
- One question per screen, emoji answers, frequent “we got you” interstitials.
- Ends with a BuzzFeed-style profile, a goal, a time commitment, email + name, then a long timer paywall with a personalised coupon and a cheap first month.
Flow
- Ad — “Teenagers are building businesses with AI while all you know is ChatGPT”, listing lesser-known AI tools1.
- First screen — social proof up top; a photo of someone like the viewer (an older adult, not a teen); “Are you ready for the 28-day challenge?” — short, low-commitment, easy yes2.
- First question — “Have you ever used AI?” (obvious yes), then a social-proof screen2.
- One message per screen — age, main goal, “Do you feel overwhelmed?”, comfort with AI tools (emoji scale), income range, goals; interstitials that say “we know what you’re struggling with — we got you”34.
- AI experience profile — the answers summarised into “here’s who you are”4.
- Goal — something special to achieve (start a business, save for a home, plan a vacation) — moves the user from “learn AI” to their real goal4.
- Time commitment — how many minutes a day they’ll invest; Steve cites Duolingo’s experience that committing to a goal also raises retention4.
- Email, then name, then a “readiness” level and the plan5.
- Paywall — 10-minute “discount expires” timer; now-vs-goal before/after; long scroll with 4-week program, “AI is easier than you think” objection handling, “203 people purchased AI plans in the last hour”, a coupon code built from the user’s name and the month (e.g. Steve_July2025), per-day pricing, first month ~$20 renewing at ~$40, money-back guarantee, Apple Pay, and “91% of users are satisfied and stay after the plan” next to the CTA5678910.
- The timer is real — Steve waited it out; the discount was gone, which creates loss aversion and nudges a return visit purchase10.
- Downsell on exit — the X on checkout leads to a cheaper offer (e.g. $48 → $36, “25% off”)11.
