The UGC app-ad format — captions, green screen demo, phone in hand, wild hooks
Alex's distilled format from ~$1.5M of Meta spend on Boost App Social — always caption, put the creator over a green-screen app demo, show the phone in hand, recut for pace, and open with a hook aimed at one specific frustration.
The UGC app-ad format
TL;DR (Alex, Boost App Social, 2026)
- Always add captions — he estimates ~80% of Instagram/TikTok viewers watch without sound.1
- Green screen: creator talking in front, a large app demo behind — company plus product proof in one frame.2
- Go wild with hooks — the first ~5 seconds matter most; work on the visual opening as much as the copy.3
- Hook one specific frustration (“stuck at 1,000 views on Reels”) rather than a generic promise — smaller reach, much higher relevance.4
- Show the phone in hand (filmed with a second camera) next to screen recordings; mix and match clips.5
- Recut for pace — trim noise, faster transitions “Mr Beast style”.6
Details
Structure that worked. A hook built around a desired outcome (“I can’t believe I found this app”) followed by ~30 seconds of pure product demo of features and results — e.g. the creator’s account in the background with followers pouring in.74 Variants: a notes-app to-do list behind the creator, or lifestyle videos (“I couldn’t believe hashtags helped me grow”).8 Labels and coloured strokes around the green-screen frame helped.4
Why a person plus the app. Just showing the app isn’t the same — the creator keeps the viewer company and entertains while the demo proves the value.2
Briefing creators. Give TikTok-native creators a one-page (A4) brief: what the app is, which triggers/hooks work for your customers — then let them adapt it in their own style. Reject obviously low-effort hooks, but leave room for creativity: the rare “diamond” pays back hundreds of thousands.89
Editing rights. Their creator contracts allowed editing and recombining footage, so 5 delivered videos typically became ~15 test variants.510
Disagreements / caveats
- Distilled from one Meta-heavy app in the social-media-growth niche, whose audience lives on Instagram; validate in your category.
- Even “technically excellent” ads in this format often fail — see Creative volume and hit rate — why you need dozens of ads per winner.
- Compare with the hook → demo → offer → end-card structure in Structure and concepts for paid app video ads; they’re compatible (this note is the UGC execution).
