The UGC / creator ad formula and the formats that convert
Dara Denney's recipe for converting creator ads (hook, modular script — hook, problem agitator, solution, features/benefits, social proof, CTA — the creator "sniff test", dynamic B-roll), the classic UGC formats (problem-solution, tutorial, review, comparison, ugly, GRWM, educational, personal history, skits), and the five creator formats scaling in 2026 (authority, personal-history yapper, educational breakdown, investigative journalism, transformation/comparison).
The UGC / creator ad formula and formats
TL;DR
- In a 2025 analysis of 20 brands, >50% of top performers were creator content — higher for brands spending 7 figures/month.1
- The “people trust people who look like them” story is over (viewers know creators are paid); what works is the right creators telling stories they already care about — “creators, not UGC-ers”.23
- Recipe: great hook + modular script + creator who passes the sniff test + lots of dynamic B-roll.45
- 2026 shift: classic problem-solution UGC “feels like a f***ing ad”; personal storytelling is the top format scaling for creators and brands (Modash survey).67
Details
Modular script — six swappable modules (re-cut across creators into compilations):5
- Hook — grab the desired audience.
- Problem agitator — deepen relatability, sharpen the pain.
- Solution introduction — product as the answer.
- Features & benefits.
- Social proof.
- CTA.
Sniff test (first 3 s of a creator’s footage): vulnerable? aspirational? genuinely enthusiastic about the brand, ideally already making content in the niche? Dara’s own rule as a creator: make the most valuable content for my audience that highlights the sponsor.38
Classic formats to test (2025):91011
- Problem-solution — “El Classico”, most scalable; Dara’s safest starting point in 2025.
- Tutorial — how-to; masquerades as organic; products needing instructions.
- Review — “my honest review of…”; have creators address known objections.
- Comparison — brand vs brand or vs an experience; great with obvious competitors (tech, beauty).
- Ugly ads — post-its, one-take videos (term coined by Barry Hott).
- Day in the life / GRWM — product in a routine; crushes or flops.
- Educational knowledge share — listicle-like information, not a how-to.
- Personal history — in-depth personal story; most emotional.
- Skits — solo or with family/friends/partners (underused; extra people help). Unboxings, before/afters and compilations work better inside these than as standalone ads.12
Five creator formats scaling across Dara’s agency clients (Sept 2026):13141516
- Authority angle — whom the persona trusts (doctor, influencer); supplements, skincare.
- Personal-history yapper — starts with a true story the creator lived (works in B2B too).
- Educational breakdown — “being smart is hot”; education/marketing-niche creators are cheaper than $10k influencers and translate to skincare, beauty, fashion.
- Investigative journalism — creator investigates competitors or the category and ends at your product; first made fully with AI; one hit a 77% hook rate.
- Transformation / comparison — split screens, a list of failed attempts; no need to name competitors.
Trends Dara expects (2025): rawer authenticity (Meta’s Agency Summit ranked authenticity/intimacy above AI), AI for research/scripting but human feel, micro creators over reach, UGC hybrids with higher production.171819
Disagreements / caveats
- Problem-solution: “safest bet” in Mar 202520 → C-tier, fatigued in Aug 2026 (Meta ad creative formats ranked — Dara Denney's 51-format tier list (Aug 2026)).21
- Script freedom: Dara says line-by-line scripts produce bad content — give creators room; Caraway scripts 90% of the time — see Briefing UGC creators — how much script, what to include, modular deliverables.
