Anatomy of an ad hook — three jobs, layers, and fit-in-then-stand-out
What a hook must do (stop with emotion, target/disqualify, connect to the story), its layers (visual, audio/text, psychological — plus Dara Denney's "vibe"), why the visual layer often matters most, "hook slop", moving the ad's anchor to second one, and worked breakdowns (Ridge, Jones Road, PureSkin towel, microplastics cutting board, Burga).
Anatomy of an ad hook
TL;DR
- A hook has three jobs: (1) trigger an emotional reaction in the customer’s own language, (2) target and disqualify — call out who it’s for, (3) connect naturally to the story.1
- Meta also uses the first 3 seconds to decide whom to deliver the ad to.2
- Layers: visual, audio + text, psychological (Evan Lee); Dara Denney splits it into text overlay, sound, visual and vibe (lighting, fonts, overall feel).34
- Changing the visual hook usually moves performance more than changing the text/verbal hook — “the best hooks show, they don’t tell”.4
- Ask “what carries this ad?” and move that anchor to the first second.5
Details
Hook slop. An attention grab unrelated to the product (a makeup brand opening with a gunshot) stops people but doesn’t fit — job 3 fails.1 Motion’s own “something thrown at the window” ad works only because it pays off immediately: “I got your attention, didn’t I?” for a course about scroll-stopping ads.6
Choose the bait for the fish. Evan’s metaphor: the lure for a Siberian taimen imitates a swimming mouse — hook formats must be chosen for what your audience responds to, not copied.7
Worked breakdowns (Motion bootcamp):
- Ridge wallet — golfer John Daly (wide male audience filter) + fat wallet vs Ridge visual; the line “your wallet sucks” carries the ad and is reused across many visuals (tearing, burning wallets).89
- Jones Road gel liner — “ultimate eyeliner hack for deep-set eyes”: micro-targeting that openly disqualifies others.10
- Filler-words app (“chicken nuggets”) — funny script, but the real anchor (removing “um”) arrives only ~12 s in; fix by leading with it.5
- PureSkin towel — ugly, native first frame (“what is he doing?”), doesn’t look like a towel ad, then high-production B-roll; “towels might ruin your life” + Time-cited stat (90% of towels test positive for coliform bacteria); targets Gen Z.1112
- Bamboo cutting board — yapper holding a clump of microplastics (“this is going in your family’s food”), ASMR scraping, TikTok-native text; speaks to families.13
- Burga phone case — no gimmick: an aesthetic purchase sold with lighting, setting, hands, warm “ciao bella” voice, showing colourways and charging.14
Fit in, then stand out. First understand the vibe of the target’s feed, then stand out from it; vibe products need vibe hooks, not shock.15
Multiple hooks. Dara pairs a verbal hook with a second visual hook (e.g. fruit explosion stock clip) right after the first, which keeps viewers on.16
Disagreements / caveats
- Many strategists believe you must state the problem or show the product in the first ~5 s to target correctly; Dara says post-Andromeda that’s changing — scalable ads must reach people higher in the funnel.17 For apps, Structure and concepts for paid app video ads still recommends showing the app (after the hook).
- Evan: “a good hook is not subjective” — measure it (Reading creative metrics — spend, thumbstop/hook rate, hold rate, CTR, conversion).
