What actually moves Meta ads results in 2026 — the fundamentals checklist
A consolidated checklist from Ben Heath ("97% of results"), Jon Loomer (foundational elements) and CTC (the "canon") — simplify and consolidate, make creative the targeting via diversification and creator partnership ads, accurate pixel + CAPI tracking, optimise for what you really want (value, qualified leads), value rules instead of restrictions, know and grow LTV, build brand, test with Meta's tools, read attribution properly.
Meta ads fundamentals (2026)
TL;DR
- Simplify and consolidate. Use the fewest campaigns and ad sets, near defaults. Every added piece of complexity must solve a proven, data-backed problem, not a hunch or old data (Jon Loomer).12
- Creative is the targeting. Andromeda retrieves ads creative-first. CTC cites Meta’s 10,000× increase in model capacity per impression, so the job is to give the system more options.34 Diversify across formats (image, video, carousel) and styles: founder-led, UGC, creator partnership, testimonial, animation, slideshow, meme, ASMR. “All statics” or “all UGC” isn’t diversification (Ben Heath).56
- Work with creators. Partnership ads borrow trust, recognisability and production skill. A small relevant creator can cost e.g. $800 plus product. Ask for 2 videos × 5 hooks and keep the brief loose. Find creators in Meta’s free Creator Marketplace.789
- Accurate tracking. Pixel plus Conversions API (one-click gateway), deduplicated, with a high match rate. Send offline events too. Add third-party tracking at “reasonable” budgets.1011 See Conversions API (CAPI) — why server-side conversion feedback matters.
- Optimise for what you really want. Qualified leads, the deepest event with volume, value over volume. See Choosing what Meta optimises for — "Meta is literal" (lead quality, value, funnel events) and Meta bid strategy — minimum ROAS vs cost per result goal vs lowest cost.
- Value rules, not restrictions. See Meta value rules — bid more for people worth more (instead of restricting targeting).12
- Know and grow LTV. LTV sets your affordable CAC. The pros raise customer value from $120 to $320 rather than shave CPA from $26 to $23. Ben’s Starbucks example: ~$7 per visit, but over $14,000 lifetime.1314
- Build or borrow brand. Borrow it through creators, or build it through personal and company content, so ads work better over five years, not just the next six months.15
- Test properly and read results properly. Use Meta’s testing tools, not ad-set sprawl. See Getting spend onto new Meta ads — push delivery vs the creative testing tool. Understand attribution layers and incrementality (Meta's incremental attribution model — should you switch from standard?) and audience segments (Meta audience segments — proving remarketing happens on its own).1617
Details
Loomer’s “foundational elements” (Jul 2026, from his master brief):
- consolidated structure
- algorithmic targeting, accepting that audience inputs are only suggestions
- remarketing happens naturally (prove it with segments)
- creative diversification aimed at different personas’ pain points
- a reliable tracking foundation
- evaluating in aggregate
- uncovering the layers of conversion results
- quality and value over volume1819
CTC’s canon in one line: “set the constraints, feed the machine, and let it work.”4
Unchanged at any budget (Ben): a compelling offer, creative that fits the audience, patience with learning, and a managed system, not a slot machine.20
Disagreements / caveats
- These are generalists’ lists from agencies and educators selling courses and memberships. Each point has deeper notes with dissenting views, e.g. on testing campaigns and retargeting in How to structure a Meta ads account in 2025–2026.
- Ben’s “97%” is rhetorical, not measured. His creator and CAPI sections sit next to sponsor reads for creative and tracking tools.
