Paywall content — sell the outcome and add context (long paywalls)
Paywalls convert better when they show outcomes (before/after, storage saved) and add scrollable context below the fold — one test went from $200 to $1,000 at 15 downloads/day.
Paywall content: sell the outcome, add context
TL;DR
- Sell benefits/outcomes, not features: before/after body (Muscle Booster), “you’ve used 47%, here’s what you’ll free up” (cleaner apps), “unlimited faxes to 90+ countries”.
- Users don’t read onboarding — but they read when they’re about to pay. Make the paywall long and scrollable.
- Structure: plans + CTA above the fold → social proof → benefits → free vs paid feature comparison → plans again → CTA; keep a floating CTA while scrolling.
- Results: $200 → $1,000 revenue (same 15 downloads/day) and +50% sales from adding context alone.
- Make value obvious with comparison tables (Norton tiers, OneDrive storage sizes).
Details
Outcome framing across categories: Muscle Booster shows “now vs goal” body imagery on a long paywall; a storage cleaner shows used space and how much premium will recover; a fax app lists concrete outcomes (unlimited faxes, 90+ countries, no ads, delivery tracking).12
Add context. In an A/B test with identical plans, the only change in B was a longer paywall. Plans stay at the top, but scrollers see benefits, testimonials and a free-vs-paid feature list, with the CTA at the bottom.2 Another example splits into four scroll-sections — paywall above the fold, social proof, benefits, pricing again — with a floating “Go unlimited” button.3
Results Steve cites: an older case study where revenue went from $200 (A) to $1,000 (B) with only ~15 downloads a day — so start optimising the paywall as soon as you have any traction; and an avatar/emoji app where adding context lifted sales 50% even though the product is highly visual.3
Make it obvious: feature tables (Norton Standard/Plus/Ultimate), a cleaner’s “you’re using 47%”, OneDrive’s storage per plan. And keep the CTA above the fold.4
Counterpoint on clutter: Momingo’s founder found less clutter on the final paywall worked better when value had already been built in the preceding onboarding screens.5
Disagreements / caveats
- Long paywall vs minimal paywall depends on how much value the onboarding already sold; in one client test a simple video paywall beat a longer three-screen flow (Paywall visuals — video, photos and social proof).
