The 16 human desires as ad angles

Steven Reiss's 16 basic desires (acceptance, curiosity, eating, family, honor, idealism, independence, order, physical activity, power, romance, saving, social contact, status, tranquility, vengeance) as a menu of ad angles with brand examples, the five Dara Denney finds most effective on Meta, and how to pick and iterate on one.

The 16 human desires as ad angles

TL;DR

  • Steven Reiss (Ohio State, Who Am I?) proposed 16 universal desires that motivate every decision, including purchases.1
  • Dara Denney’s five most effective on Meta: romance, family, social connection, acceptance, power.2
  • Pick by asking: what life stage/challenge is the customer in, and what emotional outcome does the product deliver? Think outside the obvious (coffee → social connection or tranquility, not just eating).34
  • Iteration: take a winner and swap the desire (e.g. inject a family angle).5
  • Counting desires per account is level 3 of Creative diversity after Meta Andromeda — the five levels.6

Details

The 16, with Dara’s examples:789101112

  1. Acceptance — community/belonging: Dove Real Beauty; HexClad’s big social-proof number “for home cooks like you”.
  2. Curiosity — seeking knowledge (The Hustle) or simply making people curious about you.
  3. Eating — food/drink as culture and togetherness (Kolkata Chai).
  4. Family — provide for/protect loved ones (insurance, cars; Cuts, True Classic mention families).
  5. Honor — loyalty to values/traditions, religion, patriotism (a hearing-aid ad shifts from “follow conversation” = acceptance to “hear the sermon at church” = honor).
  6. Idealism — social justice, doing right (Patagonia).
  7. Independence — self-sufficiency, uniqueness (Harley-Davidson; a Stepful ad: “something I did for me”).
  8. Order — structure (Container Store; “there’s a spot for that”); peaks around New Year.
  9. Physical activity — and aspiration (“the #1 tee for guys who lift”).
  10. Power — control over your outcomes (“take control of your weight”, “90 days to get your life back”).
  11. Romance — love/sex (perfume, jewelry, Dr. Squatch targeting men in relationships and girlfriends).
  12. Saving — cost-consciousness shown step by step (HexClad), not just any discount.
  13. Social contact — friends (Thrive Cosmetics referencing girlfriends doubles as social proof).
  14. Social status — prestige (luxury fashion).
  15. Tranquility — peace/calm; Dara built an ad around it that spent $2M+ at a 3 ROAS.13
  16. Vengeance — right a wrong; name the enemy (hangovers; Mud\Wtr made coffee the enemy).

Using AI: describe the product or upload a reviews CSV and ask which desire would be most effective.4

Disagreements / caveats

  • In 2024 Dara listed “beauty, romance, power, family” as the desires that work most and noted family references appeared in many 2024 top performers;5 the five-desire list above is from the same period.
  • Other models: Life-Force 8 and secondary motivators from Cashvertising.6 Emily Hickey’s emotional why (The Motivator Map — hero product, value-prop testing, why buy vs why believe) is the same idea derived from testing rather than a list.
