The three ad creative metrics that matter — thumb-stop ratio, unique link CTR, conversion rate
Smart Marketer's three creative metrics read as a story — thumb-stop ratio (3-s views ÷ impressions; >30% great, <15% rework), unique link CTR (~1.5% internal benchmark), conversion rate — plus "ad scent" when clicks don't convert, and how to build the custom metric in Ads Manager.
The three ad creative metrics that matter
TL;DR
- Read creative performance as a story: thumb-stop (the cover) → CTR (first page) → conversion rate (the ending).12
- Thumb-stop ratio = 3-second video plays ÷ impressions (video only). >30% fantastic, 20–30% solid, <15% rework the first 3 seconds.34
- Use unique link CTR, not “CTR” (which counts any click, e.g. on the page name). Smart Marketer’s benchmark is ~1.5%; Meta’s cross-objective average was quoted as ~1.6%.56
- High CTR + low conversion = broken “ad scent” — the page doesn’t match the promise or tone of the ad.7
- Thumb-stop and CTR show up fast and barely change from $1K to $10K spend; ROAS takes longer.89

Thumb-stop ratio. Smart Marketer’s name for what others call hook rate. People scroll for friends’ videos, not ads; this measures whether they pause. A high ratio also helps CPMs, because Meta rewards content people watch.8 Set it up in Ads Manager as a custom metric: 3-second video plays ÷ impressions, formatted as a percentage.3 If it’s low: get into the content sooner, test new hooks, interrupt the pattern — borrow (ethically) from engagement-bait videos that are great at stopping the scroll.4 In their live poll only about 1 in 4–5 viewers tracked it.10
CTR. Tells you whether people are interested enough to take step one; a strong hook shows here. Early indicator — no need for big spend.19
Conversion rate and ad scent. If the ad is emotional and the page is pushy and salesy, or the copy doesn’t connect, clicks don’t close.7 John: CTR and conversion are often inversely correlated — shock/curiosity ads (Taboola-style) get huge CTRs and weak conversion; a lower CTR with higher conversion can beat a viral ad.11 Always judge them together, and judge a high thumb-stop against downstream numbers too.4
Disagreements / caveats
- App sources here target hook rate 30–40% (Paid social creative testing for apps — levers, hook/hold rate, 3-day tests) — consistent with Smart Marketer’s “>30% is fantastic”.
- The 1.5%/1.6% CTR figures are Meta-wide averages quoted in the session; category and placement vary a lot.
