Designing the first version for conversion — UI/UX as the differentiator

Why an app's v1 design must be built around conversion and revenue from the start, and why polished UI/UX is the main differentiator now that AI makes building easy.

Designing the first version for conversion — UI/UX as the differentiator

TL;DR

  • Mistake #5: designing UI without conversion and revenue in mind — you will pay to redo it.1
  • Get a conversion specialist to review designs early; Jaime says Steve can spot what to fix “in 5 minutes”.1
  • Mistake #6: a cheap-looking app wastes the money spent building it; earmark budget for design.2
  • Hire designers with mobile UI/UX background specifically.3
  • With AI making development easy, “underneath the hood everything looks pretty much the same” — UI/UX is the differentiator.4
  • Keep the paywall in onboarding; don’t remove it before you have enough downloads to judge (What to work on at each stage — from launch to paid ads).5

Details

Conversion-first design (Jaime, B7 Dev, May 2026). Plan the screens around the two numbers that matter — downloads and paying users — before visual polish; otherwise you’ll be “treading water” until you discover the problem.16 The scarce input in 2026 isn’t code but experience about what converts.6

Design is your business card. The app’s look tells users whether it’s serious and professional; use accelerators or professional designers, and check their mobile portfolio.23

Steve’s addition. For anyone selling a product built on commodity AI tooling, design and UX are what set it apart.4 On monetization design, he keeps an onboarding paywall as best practice and sometimes uses a hard paywall from launch.5

Disagreements / caveats

  • Mutual promotion: Jaime recommends Steve’s agency for conversion review, Steve recommends Jaime’s for development.1
  • No test data is given here; for screenshot/listing conversion evidence see the ASO notes, for paywall evidence see the monetization cluster.
