Is my app ready for Meta ads? Funnel benchmarks and the 7-point checklist
Steve P. Young's 7 checks before spending on Meta ads for an app — funnel conversion targets (5–10% install→trial, 30%+ trial→paid, ~2% install→paid), proof strangers pay, LTV, tracking, research, concepts, budget.
Is my app ready for Meta ads?
TL;DR
- Meta amplifies what you’ve built — a leaky funnel just burns money faster.1
- Targets before launch: 5–10% install→trial (10%+ with a hard paywall), 30%+ trial→paid, ~2% install→paid.23
- Prove strangers pay — cheaply, via ASO/Apple Ads — before Meta.4
- Need ≥$3 LTV per install; Meta’s trial optimization needs 50 events/week.53
- Verify Meta SDK events match App Store Connect; prepare 3–5 distinct ad concepts for one ad set.67
Details
The seven checks (Oct 2026):1
- Optimized funnel. Clear promise on the App Store page that matches the ads (ideally ad ↔ screenshots), onboarding that shows value fast, paywall inside onboarding — Steve leans to a hard paywall for all Meta paid traffic — and a purchase flow that works end to end.8 Put the trial on whichever plan (yearly or weekly) has the highest LTV.2
- Proof strangers pay. Not friends/family. Validate with ASO or Apple Ads (pull channels, cheaper); expect Meta (push, interruptive) users to convert worse.4 Exception: categories with no search demand (e.g. a new social network) must test on Meta directly, at higher cost.9
- LTV ≥ $3/install (around month 11) — see Break-even CPI, revenue per install and LTV per install.5
- Tracking works — install, paywall view, start checkout, start trial, subscribe. See Validating Meta SDK app events against App Store Connect.10
- Competitor ad research in Meta Ads Library — see Researching competitors' app ads (Meta Ads Library, SocialPeta).11
- Different ad concepts, not minor variations — see Structure and concepts for paid app video ads.12
- Know your numbers — what the budget buys — see How much Meta budget does an app need? (the 50-events math).13
Benchmark math. 1,000 installs × 7% trial = 70 trials × 30% = 21 subscribers = 2.1% install→paid — the bare minimum.3 RevenueCat’s State of Subscription Apps cited: 2.6% median iOS download→paid by day 35, ~33% median iOS trial→paid; compare against your category and countries, and prefer categories with higher revenue per install.14
Disagreements / caveats
- These are Steve’s “launch checks, not guarantees”.15
- Hard paywall for Meta traffic is his preference, not a tested universal.
- Medians vary hugely by category and country.
