Finding the one repeatable organic format for your app
How Gleam (non-visual social-skills app) spent 3–4 months testing copied formats before long open-loop storytelling videos worked, why its 100K-follower POV accounts barely converted, Stella's savable "repeat for 7 days" affirmations and ManyChat comment-to-DM, Symmetry's lock-screen-notification format (17M views) and sub-format tracking — then recreating the winner "to infinity".
Finding the one repeatable organic format
TL;DR
- Don’t copy another app’s viral format — it fits their product. Gleam’s TurboLearn-style “unhinged yap”/fruit-cutting copies got few views after ~10 iterations and didn’t convert.12
- Match format to the app: visual app → show the wow moment in the first 7–10 s; no wow moment → sell the aspiration; direct value prop (health, wealth, relationships) → ads to a problem-aware audience; organic suits problem-unaware viewers.34
- Track views and conversion separately: Gleam’s “POV: overcoming social anxiety part 1” accounts reached 100K+ followers but barely converted; VSL-style direct pitches converted but got no views; animations drew low-quality audiences.56
- What worked for Gleam: longer storytelling (problem → aspiration → product resolves it) built on open loops (“Why did no one tell me what happens at run clubs?”).67
- When one works, double down instead of hedging across five new formats; exhaustion is “a good problem to have”.8
- Speed of learning = volume × feedback loops; Gleam had volume but didn’t stop to analyse until money ran low.9
Details
Stella (Sarah Pearl ("Hot High Priestess")).
- Find the most viral content in your niche, study the psychology, recreate it; when one hits, “recreate it to infinity” — she has reused the same formats for years.10
- Savable content goes viral: affirmation videos open with “repeat these for seven days” / “listen three times”, so viewers save to return.11
- Integrate the product as the answer: after the affirmations a voice asks “how can I remember all these?” → “custom affirmations on your lock screen with my app Stella”.12
- Instagram ManyChat: “comment DOWNLOAD and I’ll send your custom affirmations”; the DM also asks for an App Store review.13
- Videos that mention the app without showing the use case convert worse; a 300K-view demo converted “super well” — balance viral vs demo videos.13
Symmetry (Mauro (Symmetry)). Segment every video by format and sub-format and track them. Winner: an iPhone lock screen with a notification (“your girlfriend left you”) above a Symmetry notification (“go to the gym”) — one hit 17M views.14
Three UGC formats (Jake Castillo): talking head, wall-of-text (one-second clip under a block of text), skits. Pick one and sign only creators who have gone viral in that format.1516
Time it takes. Gleam: 3–4 months of constant iteration; faster on a second app.9
Disagreements / caveats
- Wall-of-text formats are cheap views but convert badly for Coconote (Organic content that converts vs content that only gets views); Jake still lists them as a core format.
- Stella’s success leans on a pre-built 4M-follower audience (Content first, app second — launching from a personal brand).
- Hook catalogue: Short-form hooks and formats that work for apps (2026).
