# Web paywall and checkout best practices for web2app

## TL;DR (Steve's checklist, July 2026)[^1][^2]
- **Hard paywall** — no access without paying.
- **No free trial**; instead a small intro price that renews at the regular price.
- **Long paywall** loaded with social proof.
- **Time-limited discount** (helpful, not mandatory) — and make the timer real.
- **Per-day pricing** — Steve's best performer on web checkout.
- **Apple Pay / Google Pay** shown as default payment methods.
- Bonus: **personalised coupon code**.

## Details

**Discount.** Start with a big discount — at least 50%; Igor: people don't care about 10–20%[^3]. Make it real: Headway's discounted price is genuinely lower than its regular price, not just a badge[^4]. Coursiv runs a 10-minute "discount expires" timer; Steve waited it out and the discount really disappeared — the felt loss makes a later purchase more likely[^5][^6].

**Long page, objection handling.** The CTA can appear immediately, but then answer the objections a cold web visitor has: what exactly do I get, is payment secure, do others like it, ratings, prices again. Mobile paywalls rarely need an FAQ because the user already installed the app and saw reviews; web visitors haven't[^3][^7]. Coursiv adds "AI is easier than you think" reassurance, a 4-week program outline, "here's what you get", a "203 bought in the last hour" ticker, and a money-back guarantee (you handle refunds yourself on the web; a merchant of record like Paddle can help)[^8][^9].

**Pricing display.** Convert every plan to a per-day price — the number is tiny and plans become easy to compare[^10][^11]. Show intro pricing transparently: e.g. ~$20 for the first month renewing at ~$40 (Coursiv)[^12]; Headway sells an intro price (e.g. $19.98) that rises after 3 months[^13].

**Personal touches.** Coursiv auto-applies a coupon built from the user's name and month (e.g. `Steve_July2025`) — whether or not it's a "real" code[^10]. Before/after "now vs goal" at the top[^5].

**Checkout sheet.** Show PayPal, Google Pay and Apple Pay (match the device)[^7]. Steve: Apple Pay on iPhone noticeably helps because the card is already stored[^6][^14]. Keep social proof next to the final button ("91% of users are satisfied…")[^14].

**Exit.** Closing the payment form should lead to a downsell with a bigger discount — see [[web2app-upsells-and-downsells]][^7].

## Disagreements / caveats
- Free trials: Steve and Igor both advise against them on web; Igor allows a paid micro-trial (e.g. $0.99 for 3–7 days)[^13]. This contrasts with in-app paywalls, where trials are standard.
- Counter-example: Built With Science runs a **14-day free trial on its web pricing page**; a "pay now, 20% off" no-trial toggle initially *lost*, and showing annual first with a trial timeline lifted annual mix from ~60% to 75–80% — see [[web-paywall-annual-default-and-trial-framing]][^15][^16]. Trust/brand strength probably decides which wins; test it.
- Long vs short is cultural: in Japan, Simply's clean paywall failed and a long story-and-quotes page made conversion skyrocket; BwS saw *more* context hurt on its pricing page — see [[international-localization-for-app-growth]][^17][^18].
- "Fake" timers and unverifiable counters can violate consumer-protection rules (e.g. EU/UK dark-pattern guidance); keep them honest — see [[web2app-dark-patterns-and-compliance]].
