# Web2app funnel structure, step by step

## TL;DR
- Copy the proven structure of top spenders (Headway) rather than inventing new UI — Headway's own chatbot-style variant disappeared after ~a month[^1][^2].
- Each screen does one job: get the user started, build trust, raise the value of solving their problem, or remove an objection. One message/question per screen[^3].
- Questions are about the user (their problems, feelings, goals), not the product's features[^4].
- Sell on a long hard paywall with a big discount; then one-click upsells; then deep link into the app; then a discount-escalating email sequence for non-buyers.

## The sequence

| # | Step | Job | Pattern |
|---|------|-----|---------|
| 1 | Hook screen | Get the quiz started (≈50% drop here) | Outcome-led UVP + quiz duration + first easy question[^5][^6] |
| 2 | Trust | Make finishing feel worthwhile | "40M people", press logos[^7] |
| 3 | Easy questions | Momentum | Age, gender, yes/no[^8] |
| 4 | Reward screens | Prevent survey fatigue | Congratulation / illustrated feedback after answers[^9] |
| 5 | Value prop (2nd) | Explain *value*, still not features | Broad benefit areas, aspirational choices[^10] |
| 6 | Psychology questions | Make the user feel understood; raise problem pain | Labeling, false dichotomy, "I doubt myself" yes-questions, tailored feedback[^11] |
| 7 | Curiosity | Gap between today and the outcome | Hint at content (book titles) without showing it[^12] |
| 8 | Late social proof | Re-assure before asking for data | "5M users in your location", university logos[^13] |
| 9 | Loader + mini-questions | "We're building your plan" | Reviews/sneak peeks on the loader, last tweaks[^14] |
| 10 | Results / profile | Personalisation payoff | Profile summary, goal, time commitment[^15] |
| 11 | Email capture | Lifecycle marketing | Support screen: no-spam, awards, preview[^16] |
| 12 | Future/before-after | Visualise outcome | Metric projection, before/after[^17] |
| 13 | Paywall | Convert | ≥50% discount, timer, FAQ, per-day pricing, Apple/Google Pay[^18] |
| 14 | Downsell | Save exits | Same paywall, higher discount[^19] |
| 15 | Upsells | Raise AOV | One-click charges on saved card[^20] |
| 16 | App access | Activate | Confirm email, deferred deep link[^21] |
| 17 | Winback emails | Recover quiz-completers | ~8 emails, rising discounts[^22] |

Details of each block live in the linked notes; the full worked example is [[headway-web2app-teardown]], a second one is [[coursiv-web2app-teardown]].

## Disagreements / caveats
- Funnel length depends on category — see [[web-quiz-funnel-length]].
- Complex calculators (BMI, event-date graphs) work in fitness but aren't required; Headway's funnel is deliberately simple[^2].
