# Social proof and trust in web funnels

## TL;DR
- Web visitors arrive from a Reel minutes ago: no store reviews, no install, no familiar subscription sheet — so the funnel has to build trust that an in-app paywall gets for free[^1].
- Put social proof at three points: right after the hook, near the end of the quiz (before email/paywall), and on the paywall/checkout itself.
- Formats that work: big user counts, press logos, "N users in your location", research/university logos, live purchase tickers, testimonials, app ratings, satisfaction stats next to the CTA.
- Prefer real people photos resembling the target user over illustrations[^2].

## Details

**Early (screen 2).** Headway follows its hook with "40 million people tried it" and press logos (Forbes, TechCrunch, Yahoo News, Entrepreneur). The aim is to make completing the quiz feel worth it[^3]. Coursiv shows social proof at the top of the first screen and again after the first question — Steve: mix questions with "no need to overload your brain, here's some social proof"[^2][^4].

**Late (before the ask).** "Join over 40M people" and "5M users in your location" (the location number is static for everyone). Other funnels show university logos framed as "based on research from Stanford" — implying, not claiming, affiliation[^5].

**Real-time proof (e-commerce style).** "1,002 people have learned…" with a ticker of emails (Headway, Booking.com-style)[^6]; "203 people purchased personal AI plans in the last hour" (Coursiv) — Steve notes Apple/Google might object to this in-app, but on the web you control it[^7][^8]. Steve calls this real-time social proof and borrows it from e-commerce[^9].

**On the paywall/checkout.** FAQ blocks answering "what is it / is payment secure / do others like it", reviews and app ratings, and "91% of users are satisfied and stay after the plan" next to the purchase button[^1][^10].

**Authority by association.** Asking which famous people inspire the user builds trust without explicit claims — see [[web-quiz-psychology-questions]][^11].

## Disagreements / caveats
- Igor openly says many funnels fake press logos by copying Headway's style[^12]; static "users in your location" numbers and implied university affiliations are borderline. Fabricated proof risks consumer-protection, ad-platform and payment-provider (chargeback/MoR) trouble — use only true claims.
