title: Proof placement and believable claims
slug: proof-and-believable-claims
summary: Make every claim specific and attach its proof right next to it (PCPO), prefer demonstrations and one big proof point over walls of testimonials, and phrase big results so they don't trigger "too good to be true".

# Proof placement and believable claims

## TL;DR
- **Specific beats general:** "At 60 mph the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock" vs "it travels quietly at high speed". Replace every vague adjective and round number with precise data or a sensory detail[^1][^2].
- **Proof must prove a specific claim.** Use PCPO — Problem → Cure → Proof → Outcome/Offer — and put the testimonial or demo directly below the claim it verifies[^2][^3].
- A wall of random testimonials at the bottom or middle "does almost nothing" for conversions (Joanna)[^2].
- **Demonstrations beat copy:** Blendtec blending iPhones, Purple's egg test, Domino's speed guarantee[^2].
- **One big proof > many small ones** (Shopify: 5,000 engineers onboarded in 3 months, 3× code)[^4].
- Use social proof as the *opening* of the buy box — Ezra Firestone's test below.

## Details
**Specificity.** Vague claims trigger scepticism and leave no image; specific numbers, precise times and concrete detail make readers see the scene. VOC-sourced copy is usually specific already ([[voice-of-customer-copy-mining]])[^2].

**Placement (PCPO).** Joanna Wiebe ([[people/joanna-wiebe]]): state the problem, present the cure, immediately follow with proof (testimonial or demonstration) that validates *that* cure, then the outcome or offer. On websites and landing pages, never leave a testimonial floating alone[^2][^3].

**Plausible phrasing.** Big results with non-miraculous language: timeframe ("over a year"), ratio ("9 in 10"), "more than double" — see [[funnel-stage-copy-triggers]][^5].

**E-commerce evidence.** Ezra Firestone ([[people/ezra-firestone]]) replaced the product name at the top of BOOM! by Cindy Joseph's buy box with a short, enthusiastic customer testimonial. Revenue per visitor went from $27.50 to $28.76 and conversion rate rose 5%; the test was repeated "over and over" with the same winner[^6][^7]. Also: review stars in the buy box, anchored to the reviews section further down[^8]; aggregate social-proof images ("100 five-star reviews", customer counts, expert/press mentions)[^9].

**Collecting specific testimonials.** Alex Cattoni ([[people/alex-cattoni]]) asks buyers four questions instead of "any feedback?": what was going on before, their biggest doubt before buying, what has happened since (specific results), and what advice they'd give their past self. The answers speak directly to people still on the fence. Before you have any buyers, a live sign-up notification on the page can stand in for testimonials (see [[psychological-triggers-in-copy]])[^11].

**High-ticket / expertise sales.** Senior buyers have been burned by over-promising consultants; at closing time it comes down to evidence — case studies with exact outcomes, numbers, process specificity. "Trustworthiness is shown, not told"[^10].

## Disagreements / caveats
- Ezra stacks many proof elements (testimonial + stars + social-proof images + reviews widget) on PDPs; Joanna warns too much proof creates suspicion. Likely difference: impulse-price physical products vs considered B2B/expertise buys. Keep each proof attached to a claim either way.
- Ezra states the RPV change as "$3.25 more per visitor", but $27.50 → $28.76 is +$1.26 (~4.6%); trust the two figures, not the delta.
