Lead ads with the product's "magic moment" (often an AI feature)
Features that make people react — PhotoRoom's AI background removal, Simply Draw bringing a child's drawing to life, Cal AI's photo-to-calories, Pingo's AI roasting pronunciation — make the best ad hooks, cut CAC and can unlock markets that never worked with paid ads.
Lead ads with the product’s magic moment
TL;DR
- Put the never-seen-before feature in the first ~6 seconds of the ad (PhotoRoom’s finding).1
- PhotoRoom’s AI background feature raised in-app subscriber conversion and ad performance enough to unlock Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, where paid UA hadn’t been profitable.12
- Mine real usage for creatives: Simply builds many ads from moments users love — e.g. Simply Draw’s AI animation of a child’s drawing, which parents share organically.34
- Design features with distribution in mind: “would this make a good TikTok?” / write the launch tweet before building (ElevenLabs).56
- Make the demo itself the entertainment: Pingo’s creators mispronounce words on camera and the AI roasts them — $500k/month and 1B+ views, competing with Duolingo.7
Details
Why it works. A tenth calorie tracker or language app gets scrolled past; a capability the viewer hasn’t seen earns attention and a click (Phil Carter). Cal AI is the classic case — the hook was “just take a photo of your meal”.28
Simply Draw (2026). Animating the drawing a kid just finished during the first-time experience made kids run to show parents, parents saw “positive screen time” and conversion rose; the same moment became ad creative and organic Instagram shares.34
Process. When a feature ships and users react strongly, test it as an ad concept immediately; conversely, prioritise roadmap items that produce a shareable 3-second demo — but beware building gimmicks that make good videos and don’t retain (David Barnard’s caveat).56
Disagreements / caveats
- PhotoRoom’s numbers are relayed second-hand by Phil (from his podcast with Olivier Lemery), not quantified.
- Novelty decays: once every competitor ships the same AI feature, the hook stops working (David Barnard on Cal AI’s copycats).9
