title: Organic UGC vs paid ads — margins, ceilings, and using organic winners as ads

summary: Joseph Choi's economics — paid ads run ~10–30% margins on a creative-fatigue treadmill, organic mass-UGC 50–80% but with a ~$1–3M/year ceiling — and three ways to recycle viral organic content into paid campaigns.

# Organic UGC vs paid ads

## TL;DR (Joseph Choi, Superwall podcast, Sept 2026)
- **Paid ads: ~10–30% margin** (spend $10, get back $11–13) — scalable, but creatives fatigue and the work never stops.[^1]
- **Organic mass-UGC: ~50–80% margin** — but you must earn every view, and the content must sell without feeling like an ad.[^1][^2]
- Organic has a **natural ceiling of roughly $1–3M/year** from TikTok + IG Reels views alone.[^3]
- Model organic as **revenue = total views × conversion rate** (Halo's founder: $0 → $300k/month in 45 days, 600M views in two months, no ad budget).[^2]
- When organic saturates, **fuel paid with it**: (1) run viral organic videos as ads, (2) graft proven organic hooks onto ad creatives, (3) hire the organic creators who performed to shoot ad UGC.[^3][^4]

## Details
**Different problems.** With ads you buy attention, so distribution is solved and you only optimise conversion. Organic flips it: no one watches because you posted; the algorithm must be persuaded every time.[^2]

**Why organic creators make better ad talent.** Joseph claims they beat ~90% of traditional UGC-ad talent because the algorithm has trained them: stronger hooks, content that doesn't feel like an ad.[^4] Organic content is also "double-dipped": it converts once organically and again as an ad.[^3]

**Platform risk of paid-only.** Alex (Boost App Social, ~100% Meta) sold partly to take chips off the table: account bans (6–8, some "permanent") or doubled CPMs could have ended profitability overnight; his next product grows purely organically.[^5]

## Disagreements / caveats
- Margin ranges and the $1–3M "TAM" are Joseph's observations across apps he advises, not audited data; he sells a founder community.
- Paid can still be the right *first* channel when the audience doesn't live on TikTok or when there's search demand — see [[founder-led-virality-before-ugc]] and Apple Ads notes.
- Organic success can be a trap later: Yuliya Lennox saw organic-heavy apps plateau and paid cannibalise organic — see [[paid-vs-organic-cannibalization]].
