title: How to raise a Meta campaign's budget — automated rules, stepped increases and the scaling ceiling
slug: meta-budget-scaling-methods
summary: Ben Heath's two scaling methods (automated rules, +3%/day when 7-day CPA is under target, −3% when over; or manual steps of 50→100→150…→1,000 with shrinking percentages every 5–10 days), Jon Loomer's pre-check (is it scalable among new audiences / 1-day click?) and ~15% steps, why increases cause temporary instability, finding the scaling ceiling — and why not to duplicate campaigns.

# How to raise a Meta budget

## TL;DR
- **First check it's worth scaling** (Jon Loomer). Look only at **new-audience** results in the audience-segment breakdown, and at **1-day click or incremental** results. Remarketing-heavy results won't scale.[^1][^2]
- **Option 1: automated rules** (Ben Heath), for "tinkerers" who can't leave accounts alone:
  - increase the daily budget **3%** once a day if 7-day cost per result is below target (e.g. <£50)
  - decrease **3%** if it's above a higher threshold (e.g. >£75)
  - keep a buffer band in between, plus a max cap and a min floor[^3][^4][^5]
- **Option 2: stepped manual increases**, for calm operators. Make big jumps at low budgets and smaller ones as you grow: 50→100→150→200→300→400→500→650→800→1,000/day. Wait **5–10 days** (≈7) between steps.[^6][^7]
- Instability after an increase comes from **reaching new, colder people**, not from "resetting learning" (Loomer). Results dip and then normalise. ~15% is a "safe" step, not a rule.[^8][^9]
- Step up to find your **scaling ceiling**, the spend where ROAS hits target. Ben's example: 6.0 at $50/day falls to 4.1 at $400; with a 4× target, the ceiling is ~$400/day.[^10]

## Details
**Rule settings** (Ben's walkthrough):
- Use **daily budgets**, not lifetime.
- Use **percentage** increments rather than fixed amounts: +$10 matters at $100/day and is nothing at $1,000.
- Run once daily, scheduled midnight–1am.
- Keep Meta's default *lifetime impressions >8,000* guard so new campaigns don't scale on a lucky day.
- Set the evaluation window by conversion volume: last 3 days with lots of conversions, 7 as a default, 14–28 if you get a conversion every couple of days. Never use the 37-month maximum.
- For variable order values, use ROAS instead of cost per result.
- Don't go much above **5–7% daily**, and avoid hourly rules unless volume is enormous.[^4][^11][^12]

Compounding 3% a day grows budgets quickly while conditions hold.[^13]

**Percentages shrink with budget.** Ben has no problem tripling a working **$3/day** to $10, but wouldn't take $100K/month to $120K in one go. Fixed "20% every few days" rules are "not nuanced enough", and good prospects get scarcer the more you spend.[^14] Loomer: you won't get the same CPA at $5,000/day as at $200.[^9]

**What not to do** (Ben):
- **Duplicate the campaign** and run identical copies. This causes *auction overlap*: Meta plans impression frequency per user within a campaign and can't coordinate across copies. He has seen accounts with 11 identical campaigns.
- **10× the budget overnight.** Results crash, you scale back, and you never learn where the ceiling was.[^15][^16]

**If it breaks at once.** Results dropping immediately on a small increase usually means the ads convert warm or hyper-responsive buyers but not true cold audiences. The fix is better ads and offers.[^17]

**At the ceiling.** It may be a perceived ceiling. Make more, different ads before cutting budget, then lower it slightly if needed.[^18] On a profitable new account: "if it's working… scale."[^19]

## Disagreements / caveats
- **Duplication.** Ben and Meta oppose it. Smart Marketer's "Forrest Gump sprint" and Dara Denney duplicate winners into new ad sets or ASC. CTC duplicates evergreen campaigns into other *bid types* for bid-surface expansion. See [[meta-scaling-winners]], [[meta-underspend-and-never-turn-off-ads]].
- **Step sizes.** Smart Marketer's +20% every 3 days ([[meta-ads-scaling-rules-and-budget-split]]) and Loomer's ~15% sit between Ben's tiny automated 3% and his 100% jumps at low spend.
- Ben's personality framing (tinkerer vs calm) is a heuristic, not data.
