title: Pricing influencer deals — RPM cap, flat rates and minimum view clauses
slug: influencer-deal-pricing-rpm-and-flat-rates
summary: How Cal AI priced creator deals — never pay a CPM above your revenue per 1,000 views, base rates on a creator's average (not best) views, prefer flat rates to keep the viral upside, and use a minimum view clause set below what the creator claims.

# Pricing influencer deals — RPM cap, flat rates, minimum view clauses

## TL;DR
- Compute **revenue per 1,000 views (RPM)** per niche; **never pay a CPM above it** — that guarantees a loss.[^1]
- Set the rate from the creator's **expected (average) views**, aiming at break-even or small profit.[^2][^3]
- The real profit is in the occasional **mega-viral post**; **flat-rate** deals let you keep that asymmetric upside.[^2][^3]
- If a creator insists on a number ($1,000/month), meet it and **raise deliverables** instead.[^4]
- **Minimum view clause**: the creator says "I can easily get 1M" — agree, and write in a floor around 700–800K. Profitable for you, easy for them.[^5][^6]
- Jake still paid unrequested bonuses in good months.[^7]

## Details
**The RPM ceiling ([[people/jake-castillo]]).** Find how much you make per 1,000 views *in that niche*; the CPM you pay must be below it. Many creators will refuse, and you let them go.[^1] How to measure RPM is in [[measuring-organic-creator-attribution]].

**Why flat rates.** Influencer and UGC returns are driven by viral hits. Price on average views; the viral post is pure profit. Per-view pay hands that upside to the creator.[^2][^3] Jake's later framing: ~90% of UGC videos break even or lose money and the viral ~10% makes it all back, so start creators on low-risk trial deals at flat fees — a viral hit is "when, not if" with enough shots on goal.[^13][^14]

**Negotiating.**[^4][^8]
- Creators who get their cash number usually care less about deliverables, so trade volume for price.
- Get on calls and act like "a regular person", not a sleazy agent; when the math doesn't work, decline kindly and refer them to a better-fit brand.

**Minimum view clause ([[people/alfie-dickens]]).** Creators always claim 1–2M views a video, which only happens when a post overperforms. Alfie accepted the claim and added a guaranteed floor a couple of hundred thousand below it, framed as "so you hit it every month without stress". Creators usually agreed, having just set the bar themselves.[^5][^6]

**CPM over time.** At first Cal AI aimed for very low CPMs because nobody knew the app and viewers need several exposures (the "seven touches" rule). As awareness grew, each view converted better, so it could pay more per deal.[^9][^10]

**Market drift.** Both say rates rose by 2026: more brands chasing the same creators, and agents on creators with only 5–10K views a video. Alfie says $1–2 CPM influencer deals got much harder in the last six months, which pushed teams towards UGC.[^11][^12]

## Disagreements / caveats
- Flat rates contrast with Nicole Cheung's base + decreasing-CPM bonuses ([[ugc-creator-recruiting-and-pay]]) and SideShift's capped bonuses ([[ugc-pay-structures-and-free-views]]). Flat suits established influencers with predictable views; per-view suits cheap, high-volume UGC.
- Jake's "pay more as awareness grows" and Alfie's same-niche saturation story ([[creator-niche-selection-by-audience-intent]]) pull in different directions: saturation hits narrow niches first.
