# Headway's web2app funnel teardown

Teardown by [[people/igor-lyubimov]] with [[people/steve-p-young]], published Dec 2025. Headway is
among the biggest web2app spenders (Igor: hundreds of millions/year), has tested many variants, and
its funnel is deliberately simple — so it's a safe template to model[^1][^2].

## TL;DR
- ~50 screens, 3–7 minutes; traffic mostly from Meta, also TikTok, Snapchat, AppLovin[^3][^4].
- The quiz never sells features (it never even says "book summaries"); it sells becoming "the most interesting person in the room" and makes the user feel understood.
- Paywall: ≥50% real discount, FAQ, Apple/Google Pay/PayPal; downsell on close; 1-click upsells; deferred deep link into the app; 8 winback emails.

## Screen by screen

1. **Hook.** Headline is the outcome ("become the most interesting person in the room"), not "Welcome to Headway"; promises a *3-minute* quiz; first screen already asks a question (age) instead of a bare "Get started"[^4][^5].
2. **Trust.** "40 million people tried it" plus press logos (Forbes, TechCrunch, Yahoo News…). Igor: many copycats fake these logos[^5][^6].
3. **Easy question** (gender etc.) — keep both question and answers trivial early[^6].
4. **Reward screen.** Bright, fun illustration congratulating the user — a small dopamine hit so it doesn't feel like a boring survey[^7].
5. **Broad interests** — self-confidence, mindset, empathy, exercise, personal finance, creativity: everyone finds something[^7].
6. **Second value prop** — explains the value people get, still no features[^8].
7. **Celebrity question** — "Whose life principles inspire you most?" (Steve Jobs, Branson, LeBron). Implies the content without claiming it: authority bias + association[^8][^9].
8. **Labeling** — "big picture or detail-oriented?", followed by a feedback screen that changes by answer ("big-picture thinking helps solve problems")[^10].
9. **Fact interstitials** — e.g. "people spend 4.9 hours a day on their phones" to keep it a conversation[^10].
10. **Vulnerability yes-questions** — "I tend to doubt myself", "I find it hard to decide quickly", "Do you worry you're not good enough?"; almost everyone says yes and feels seen; the funnel responds supportively, like a non-judging psychologist[^11][^12].
11. **False dichotomy** — leader or follower?; plus job satisfaction and work-life balance questions — none personalise the product[^12][^13].
12. **Curiosity** — yes/no on real-sounding book titles (Deep Work, How to Talk to Anyone, love languages), never showing the books[^14][^15].
13. **Late social proof** — "Join 40M people", "5M users in your location" (static for every location)[^15].
14. **Anchoring the reason** — specific reason for self-growth, then time availability[^16].
15. **Loader with mini-questions** — "Do you self-reflect?", "Do you like to learn by listening?" (implies audiobooks without saying so)[^16][^17].
16. **Email** — supported, not a bare field[^17][^18].
17. **Future + before/after** — projected metric and before/after (books read, insight in 15 min) in Headway's brain illustration style; "1,002 people have learned…" with emails ticker[^18].
18. **Paywall** — discount first; FAQ-style blocks ("What you get with Headway"), security reassurance, reviews, ratings, prices again; payment sheet with PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay[^19][^20].
19. **Downsell** — closing the payment sheet returns the same paywall with a bigger discount. The discount is real (price actually lower), not just a badge[^20][^21].
20. **Upsells** — post-payment pages, one-click add-ons (e.g. infographics) charged on the saved Stripe token, each at a distinct price[^21][^22].
21. **Access** — "Is this email correct?", then deferred deep link into the app with subscription active; the app itself shows another upsell on launch[^23].
22. **Winback** — 8 emails for those who left email but didn't buy; see [[web2app-winback-email-sequence]][^24].

Pricing: introductory price (e.g. $19.98) that rises after 3 months; no free trial[^25].
