# Hard paywall only for paid traffic

## TL;DR
- Add a "How did you hear about us?" screen in onboarding (Rest of Me, Flow, Cal AI all have one).
- Answer "App Store search" → soft paywall with an X. Answer Instagram / Facebook / TikTok → hard paywall, no X.
- Gets the trial lift of a hard paywall where you pay for traffic, while limiting one-star reviews from organic users.
- Superwall's attribution integration lets you do the same based on real ad source (Meta ads) instead of self-report.
- The survey answers double as attribution and ad-creative research.

## Details
Steve noticed a pattern among bootstrapped founders he interviewed: Meta traffic + hard paywall.[^1] Since the downside of hard paywalls is negative reviews, his idea is to show the hard version only to some users. Users who searched the App Store (often brand searches or strong organic rankings) see the X; users who pick a paid social channel don't. It's simple to code.[^2][^3]

Someone executed it and shared results on LinkedIn/X: using Superwall's attribution ("app stack") integration, they showed a hard paywall to users from Meta ads while keeping the soft version for organic downloads; trial-start rate was clearly higher on the hard variant.[^4][^5] Steve's caveat: trial activations will go up, but monitor trial-to-paid.[^5]

**Attribution-question tricks.**
- A former podcast guest advised Steve (whose audience skews older) to add two prestige-sounding options to the list — the context implies TV — because they lend instant credibility even if you don't run TV ads. For one client, ARPU rose 30% after adding them.[^6]
- Better Sleep's version randomises option order; founders tell Steve this self-reported data is as good as an attribution source.[^7]

## Disagreements / caveats
- The ARPU result is a single client; the "credibility options" are mildly misleading — weigh brand risk.
- Self-reported source is noisy; an MMP/paywall-tool integration is more reliable.
