title: Google Play ASO specifics — listings, quality signals and data quirks

summary: How Google Play differs from the App Store for ASO — description indexing and higher ratings bars, custom store listings (up to 50, Google Ads targeting), technical quality thresholds (ANR/crash) that cut browse traffic, app size, the Data safety form, and why Play "organic" and "search" numbers are mixed.

# Google Play ASO specifics — listings, quality signals and data quirks

## TL;DR
- Play ranks on **name, short description and long description** — no keyword field, and the US-localization trick doesn't exist there.[^1][^2]
- Ratings bars can be far higher than on iOS: for "weather forecast" the Play competition had ~17,000 ratings where small iOS apps ranked with a handful.[^2]
- **Custom store listings (CSLs):** up to **50** URL-based alternative listings (May 2022), targetable per Google Ads campaign — Play's answer to Apple's 35 CPPs.[^3][^4]
- **Technical quality is an ASO factor:** Jevgen Tarasenko (2022) cited a Play ANR "bad behaviour" threshold of **0.47%**; above **~1%** featuring drops, and staying above 1–1.5% can cost most browse traffic.[^5][^6]
- **App size** matters in Android-dominated emerging markets with poor connections.[^6][^7]
- Play console data is **mixed**: since ~2020 UAC traffic blends into explore/search, and the 2023 reclassification counted brand search as "search" but not generic.[^8][^9][^10]

## Details
**Metadata (Ariel Michaeli, Appfigures, Sept 2025).** Keyword use in the name, the description and the short description all count; Play results are capped (249 results for "weather forecast" in his example) whereas App Store results run into the thousands.[^2][^11]

**CSL strategy (Storemaven, 2022).** Same logic as CPPs: one listing per audience. Examples they gave: a recipe app with a Thanksgiving/turkey listing in the US; dating apps splitting by gender; an IP-based game with one listing about the IP and one about the genre for players of competing non-IP games. Start with a handful, not 50.[^12][^13] Storemaven hoped CSLs on search-targeted Google Ads campaigns would let teams separate paid from organic search again.[^8] CSLs are also a measurement tool in their own right.[^14]

**Quality thresholds.** Jevgen's 2021 correlation study (Tilting Point) put ANR and crash rates among the factors that matter on both stores, alongside UA.[^5] Monitoring Android vitals is now part of the ASO job.[^6]

**Experiments.** Play's store listing experiments are frequentist and, since 2022, let you set confidence and MDE with a built-in sample-size calculator — see [[aso-ab-test-sample-size-and-bold-variants]]. Practitioners often run creative tests on Play first and carry learnings to iOS ([[ppo-limitations-and-workarounds]]).

**Data safety (2022).** Google added a data-collection section to listings, mirroring Apple's privacy labels; the form had to be filled by 20 July 2022 or the listing would be pulled. Storemaven's tests on Apple showed users barely notice such sections, so their advice was: be honest, don't over-optimise.[^15][^16]

**Brand vs generic workaround.** Export search terms from Play Console and label them yourself ([[aso-audit-and-prioritization]]).[^10]

## Disagreements / caveats
- The 0.47% / 1% figures are Jevgen's recollection in 2022 ("I don't remember the exact numbers"); Google's current Android vitals thresholds (general knowledge, verify) are 0.47% user-perceived ANR and 1.09% user-perceived crash rate overall.[^5]
- CSL count, Google Ads integration and Data safety deadlines are 2022 announcements; check current Play Console docs.
