title: Founder ads — why they win and how to make them
slug: founder-ads
summary: Why founder content is S-tier on Meta (often a brand's first top performer), the founder hooks that test best (why I built this; "I'm X, founder of Y" with name in text overlay), going high-fi via 10–20 interview questions instead of a script, and whitelisting from founders' personal accounts.

# Founder ads

## TL;DR
- Dara Denney ranks founder content **S tier**: lo-fi or high production, telling **why you built the brand** connects with people who share the problem; it's often a brand's **first top performer**.[^1][^2]
- Two hooks to always test: **why I built this** (the failed attempts) and **"I'm X, the founder of Y"** with name + "founder" in **text overlay** (split-tested, almost always wins).[^3]
- Going high-fi? Founder ads are the format most likely to repay production — interview the founder with **10–20 questions** instead of scripting.[^4][^5]
- Whitelist from the founder's personal account — free partnership ads.[^6][^7]

## Details
**Why they work.** They don't feel like ads; in the US entrepreneurs are treated like rock stars, and viewers listen to someone aspirational or similar to them.[^3]

**Production.** Many brands stop at lo-fi founder iterations. Dara produced a high-fi founder ad 4+ years ago that was still running; the secret was unscripted answers — scripted founders come out "blah". She credits Barry Hott for the same advice.[^4][^5]

**Example (Ridge).** "Your wallet sucks. That's why we invented the Ridge wallet. Hey, I'm Daniel, one of the founders…" — founder intro after a blunt anchor line.[^8]

**Pair with other formats.** Warehouse and duet/stitch ads mostly work when combined with founder content; founder on a well-known podcast is the only podcast ad Dara still rates.[^9][^10]

**Funnel role.** Sarah Levinger has seen founder ads work well as **purchase-phase** creative.[^11]

**Prompts, not scripts (Barry Hott).** Founders read scripts badly. Ask them questions and let them answer on camera; the same goes for customers.[^13]

**Reluctant founders.** Flakes founder Jason Goode didn't want to be the face. His co-founder/CMO pushed, and he shot his first founder ad about two months after the March 2023 launch.[^14] Barry's highest-impact 2024 ad was a phone-shot, ~2:15 **founder round-table conversation** (in the style of AdCrate's ads for brands like licorice.com). It spent $130–140K in 7 days in every ad set and landing page it was tested with ([[ad-storytelling-and-the-so-what-test]]).[^15]

**Protect the founder's time for it.** One of Barry's founder-CEO clients stopped making content because of other priorities. His pitch: nothing else in her week turns so little effort into so much result, and the founder's story and authority are the hardest things to replicate. As the company grows the CEO should step back from reviewing every ad, but not from appearing in them.[^16][^17]

**Tushy's take.** Get founders on camera speaking to key personas; Tushy uses two co-founders (a woman and a man) for different demographics. "If your founder is not down for that, literally pressure them."[^6][^7]

## Disagreements / caveats
- Marketing "gurus" say nobody cares about a founder intro; Dara's tests disagree.[^3]
- The founders in Barry's roundtable are an unusual sample: founder-CEOs who are deeply involved in creative, and who say that wasn't normal a few years ago.[^18]
- Employee-generated content rarely scales as well as founder content (Dara, B tier).[^12]
- For apps, see [[founder-led-virality-before-ugc]] — founders find viral organic formats before paying creators.
