title: Finding small-product ideas — build to find signal, scratch your own itch, ride a moment
slug: finding-indie-product-ideas
summary: Where the ideas behind Marc Lou's ~30 products and Starter Story case studies came from — personal pain (a $1.6k Stripe invoice fee → Zenvoice $15k), DMs asking for something you built for yourself, spin-offs of previous products, remixes of games you love, trends and timely conversations — plus Marc's quit rule of ~1,000 visitors.

# Finding small-product ideas

## TL;DR
- Marc Lou: stop looking for a brilliant idea — build anything, make noise, and signal (real problems people pay for) shows up.
- Best sources in his portfolio: your own pain, people asking for something you made for yourself, and spin-offs of what you built before.
- Remix something you love for your niche (Geosports = MapTap + sports trivia).
- Timing beats novelty: heatwave AC alerts, a viral tweet about fake revenue screenshots.
- Kill fast: after ~1,000 visitors Marc says he knows whether a product can work; pick products whose marketing you'll enjoy.
- Counterweight: Starter Story's guests stress solving a *painful* problem verified with customers, not building in isolation.

## Details
**Personal pain.** Zenvoice: Marc found Stripe charged 0.4% per transaction for PDF invoices — $1.6k lost in a year — and built the fix, which made $15k (a "10x" on the loss).[^1][^2] ByeDispute came from being banned overnight by Stripe after one customer's repeated payments.[^3] DataFast came from needing analytics joined with revenue across his portfolio.[^4]

**Noise → signal.** IndiePage started as his own portfolio page in his Twitter bio; people DMed asking for the same, so he productised it ($43k).[^5] PoopUp existed because visitors kept commenting on Zenvoice's notifications and a friend said "make a product out of it". Every idea, he says, came from a previous product.[^6][^7]

**If you still have nothing.** Try a new hobby or talk to new people and look for app ideas there, or rebuild something you use (habit tracker, alarm clock).[^8]

**Remix a favourite.** Frank's brother showed him MapTap; driving home from a wedding he imagined a sports version, built Geosports that weekend, and it reached ~$40k/month in three months.[^9][^10]

**Ride the moment.** Pieter Levels tweeted that too many founders fake revenue screenshots; Marc built TrustMRR (verified Stripe revenue) in under 24 hours and quote-tweeted him.[^11] Cyril's AC-restock alerts sold during a European heatwave.[^12]

**Kill or keep.** Marc's rule: if after ~1,000 visitors the numbers aren't there, move on — expectations grow with time invested and lead to burnout. Also move on if you see potential but can't market it.[^8] He dropped a healthy-restaurant database when he estimated ~$50k of data and AI costs, and built a small pesticide-ranking MVP for fun instead.[^13][^14]

**The opposite emphasis.** Gaurav (Fastlane, $69k/month) started too wide — an all-in-one AI marketing tool (SEO, LLM visibility, Reddit, short-form) — and only found the product after customer calls narrowed it to short-form video.[^15] See [[customer-discovery-calls-at-scale]].

## Disagreements / caveats
- Marc's "ideas don't matter, ship volume" works with a distribution engine (big audience, launch skills); Starter Story's guests and the presell approach in [[presell-demand-test-before-building]] put validation first.
- Several "own pain" ideas (ByeDispute, WorkbookPDF) earned little — personal pain is no guarantee of a market or of a channel you can work.
