title: Demand creation vs demand capture — the "modern distribution" playbook (Skullcandy and TikTok Shop)
slug: demand-creation-vs-demand-capture-channels
summary: CTC's framework for low-LTV consumer brands — ecommerce is only ~17% of transactions and Amazon ~40% of online, so impression-heavy channels (TikTok Shop, CTV, creator content) create demand that is captured on Amazon and in retail; Skullcandy's TikTok Shop grew 4.3x Jan→Aug 2026 while its own ecommerce grew 2.7x; don't take big retail distribution without a demand engine.

# Demand creation vs demand capture

## TL;DR
- Map every **media channel** and every **sales channel** by how much they *create* demand vs *capture* it. Most brands silo them instead.
- **Most demand is captured offline:** ecommerce is ~17% of US transactions, and ~40% of online sales happen on Amazon. Shopify is growing, and TikTok Shop is the fastest-growing channel.
- **Meta's click-optimised ads have small halo effects.** Impression-led channels (TikTok, CTV, organic creator content) spill over into Amazon and retail.
- **Skullcandy** (bad LTV, poor margins, faded brand) used TikTok Shop as its demand engine. TikTok Shop grew 4.3x from January to August 2026, with its own ecommerce up 2.7x on the spillover.
- **Don't take a store-wide Target deal** without the demand creation to move those units. You sell to the shopper, not the retail buyer.

## Details
**Why it matters for low-LTV brands.** Taylor Holiday describes Skullcandy as a brand that "would not win" on LTV ("people don't need 100 pairs of headphones"), with weak margins (electronics plus warranties), normal AOV and a dead brand. When it came to CTC three years earlier, its online revenue was small. It had to win on new-customer acquisition efficiency, again and again.[^1][^2]

**The framework.** CTC president Luke Austin's "modern distribution playbook" grid sets media channels and sales channels against demand creation and demand capture.[^3] Facts Taylor cites:[^4]
- Ecommerce is ~17% of transactions, so most demand capture in almost every category happens in retail.
- About 40% of online transactions happen on Amazon.
- Shopify GMV is growing fast, and TikTok Shop is growing fastest of all.

**Halo logic.** Meta works on a 7-day-click window because every ad is pushed towards a click conversion. That realises demand so efficiently that halo effects are small. Impression-based channels (CTV, TikTok ads, organic content) satisfy demand more broadly, so as TikTok impressions grow, value shows up on Amazon and in retail.[^5] He stresses TikTok Shop isn't just a source of ad creative for Meta. If you sell *only* there, you capture little of the demand you create.[^6][^5]

**Numbers.** TikTok Shop grew 12–20x faster than total US ecommerce in 2025 and ~9x faster in 2026.[^7] Indexed to January, Skullcandy's TikTok Shop reached ~4.3x by August and its ecommerce ~2.7x, with year-on-year growth following the spillover.[^7] Taylor says it busted the tropes that TikTok Shop is only for cheap widgets, low AOV or consumables, or can't be profitable. Those are baseline realities, not laws.[^8]

**Retail warning.** A friend's supplement company got a store-wide Target offer, and Taylor told him to refuse it: "You do not have the demand creation to support that demand capture. You will die."[^9]

## Disagreements / caveats
- [[tiktok-shop-launch-expectations]] (Ashley Wright) advises launching TikTok Shop only after Meta and Google work, with a ~3-month cold start. Skullcandy is a well-known brand with a large team, so a small brand's ramp may look more like Ashley's.
- Spiral Bible's TikTok Shop fell ~93% from its peak after a cultural spike ([[marketing-moments-calendar]]). TikTok demand can be volatile.
- CTC acquired TikTok Shop agency T-Bar Partners in this same keynote, so it has a commercial interest in the channel.[^10] Measuring halo needs MMM or geo tests ([[measurement-stack-attribution-incrementality-mmm]], [[incrementality-test-design]]), and none are shown here.
