title: Credibility vs relatability — matching creator, hook and buyer
slug: credibility-vs-relatability-creator-matching
summary: Dawson Gibbs's framework — considered purchases (flights, buying a business) need credible creators ("I'm an ex-flight attendant"), impulse products need relatable ones ("I'm broke like you") — and how a wrong creator ICP brought 45% churn at SMB Market until older creators and borrowed credibility fixed it.

# Credibility vs relatability

## TL;DR
- **Considered/expertise products** (travel deals, buying a business, finance): the creator speaks from **credibility** — "I've been a flight attendant for three years, here's my #1 flight hack".[^1]
- **Impulse products** (a $40 Dupe.com furniture saving, a Gen Z Bible app): the creator is **relatable** — "I'm you, I had this pain, here's the secret".[^2]
- Credibility products build **pages people follow** and buy from weeks later. Push harder CTAs (share with 3 friends, comment a word for a ManyChat DM, Stories giveaways).[^3][^4]
- **The creator's age and persona pick your buyer.** SMB Market got 40M views and $1.2M with 20-year-old "get rich quick" creators, but **45% churn**. Switching to 35–40-year-old creators and founder-credibility formats fixed audience quality.[^5][^6]
- Credibility ladder: none (viral product) → *I am* the expert → *reacting to* an expert (green screen) → *a family member* is the expert ("my mom's an interior designer", "my son showed me").[^7]
- "The right 40 million views are worth more than 200 million wrong views."[^8]

## Details
**Considered purchase example — Jetpack (travel app).** A flight-attendant creator's page reached ~185–200K followers.[^3][^10] The hook combines a visual hook (fixing her ponytail) with credibility in the first line, then a listicle: tip 1 (book on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday), tip 2 use Jetpack, step by step.[^9] People follow so the content is in their feed when they book weeks later.[^3]

**Funnel on credible pages ([[people/dawson-gibbs]]).** Top of funnel: broad viral posts. Middle: credibility formats that earn follows. Bottom: Instagram Stories. A 200K-follower page gets ~10K Story viewers, so the brand co-funds offers such as a $1,000 giveaway entered by sharing with three friends.[^4]

**Fixing the wrong ICP — SMB Market (subscription marketplace for buying cash-flowing small businesses).** Early hooks ("make your next $10–20K recurring tomorrow", glasses-wearing young creator in a car) attracted Gen Z and crypto viewers who couldn't buy a business. Fix: older creators, plus green-screening founder Josh's videos with "this guy is the founder, here's what he's done". That borrows his credibility while staying relatable.[^5][^6][^11]

**Older audiences.** Dawson says 30+ women and mom creators convert highest; use older creators to reach a higher-intent audience with money. A mother sharing "my son showed me this hack" is believable because she obviously isn't a full-time influencer. Post on Facebook/Instagram for 30–40-year-olds, TikTok/Snapchat for 18–25.[^12][^13][^14]

**Who pays ([[people/zack-hargett]], Coconote).** Students used the app but moms often paid. Many early viral Instagram videos were "my mom just changed my life". His test for creators: at college orientation, would you pitch a $130 note-taker to the student or to her mom?[^15][^16]

## Disagreements / caveats
- Dawson notes the SMB Market churn only surfaced 2–3 months in. Judge creator cohorts on retention, not sign-ups (see [[measuring-organic-creator-attribution]]).
- Start broad for views in the first ~2 weeks to learn which hooks and scenarios land, then move winners into credible talking-head formats.[^17] This is close to [[founder-led-virality-before-ugc]].
