title: Built With Science — scaling Meta from $0 to ~$100k/month on top of a big YouTube audience
slug: built-with-science-meta-scaling-case
summary: Case study of a 7M-subscriber fitness creator's app — a year of product work before any ads, a month to baseline Meta trial-to-paid (~25% vs 35–40% organic), avatar-based creatives without the influencer's face, in-house buying, 90% of traffic to a web quiz.

# Built With Science — Meta from $0 to ~$100k/month

## TL;DR (Ethan Ethier, Sept 2026)
- An audience buys a **launch spike, not a growth engine**: even with millions of YouTube subscribers, growth came from adding Meta, SEO and AEO.[^1]
- **Waited a year** after launch (Jan 2025 → first ads Jan 2026) to improve trial-to-paid, retention and churn — paid traffic always converts colder, so lift the floor first.[^2][^3]
- Spent **~1 month just establishing a Meta trial-to-paid baseline** to know allowable CAC; result ≈ **25% on Meta vs 35–40% organic** at $189/year.[^4][^5]
- Creatives **don't rely on the founder-influencer** (bandwidth "bus problem"): B-roll, testimonials, many AI statics; angles built around specific avatars from customer surveys.[^6][^7]
- **In-house, not an agency**, so ads match what the product actually does; clickbait drew cheap trials and poor trial-to-paid.[^8][^9]
- ~**90% of paid traffic goes to a long web quiz**, which beat direct-to-App-Store in a head-to-head test — see [[web-quiz-vs-direct-to-store]].[^10]

## Details
**Measurement.** Because organic YouTube traffic blurs attribution, an engineer built a dashboard validating that each trial genuinely came from Meta; they then feed the highest-intent users back to Meta as signals.[^11]

**Positioning enables price.** $189/year or $30/month, sold as "a personal trainer in your pocket", never as a tracker — in ads too. They haven't price-tested yet, preferring to fix retention and trial-to-paid first because price changes muddy product metrics.[^12][^13]

**Organic content still converts.** Story videos about a user's transformation drive more trials than broad educational videos; clippers repost long-form on Reels/TikTok and the viral hooks inform future videos (and ads).[^14][^15]

**Operating model.** Spend less time in Ads Manager, more on creative; keep iterating winners while slowly adding new avatars.[^7][^16]

## Disagreements / caveats
- A 7M-subscriber trust base makes the organic baseline (and premium price) atypical; the 25% Meta trial-to-paid is still well above many apps — compare with [[meta-ads-readiness-checklist]] targets.
- One company's experience; no spend-to-revenue (ROAS) numbers were shared.
