summary: Adapty's 2026 niche-level Apple Ads benchmark for subscription apps — generative AI converts better and costs less than education, lifestyle and health; utilities hold half of the top-20 niches by TTR; screen recorder and remote control beat crowded PDF readers; low-cost niches solve an immediate need, high-cost ones build a habit.

# Apple Ads benchmarks by niche

## TL;DR
- Category benchmarks are too broad. Apps in one App Store category can have very different KPIs, so Adapty cut its 2026 benchmark by **niche** (VPN, PDF reader, scanner, remote control…).[^1]
- **Generative AI** converts better than education, lifestyle and health, and costs less to acquire. Searchers for "AI photo editor" or "AI writing tool" know exactly what they want.[^1][^2]
- **Utilities** hold ~**50% of the top-20 niches by tap-through rate**: specific search, clear need, user ready to act.[^3]
- **Low-cost niches solve an immediate need; high-cost niches build a habit.** Set your CPA tolerance and LTV target by which game you're in.[^4]
- Within utilities, **screen recorder** and **remote control** are low-cost with strong conversion. **PDF reader** is crowded. **VPN** has acceptable conversion and good CPA.[^4]

## Details
**The dataset.** Adapty's "State of Apple Ads 2026" preview covered subscription apps across 59 niches and 90+ countries (Mykola Martynovets cites "1 million groups"). It was not public at the time of the June 2026 webinar.[^5]

**Why intent clarity drives cost.** High conversion means high intent, which means a lower effective CPA. Lifestyle and wellness searchers are still exploring whether an app fits. AI and utility searchers already know what they need.[^2][^3] Adapty points to its Glam AI and AI video generator case studies as examples of gen-AI apps selling subscriptions well through Apple Ads.[^6]

**Use it to pick the next app, not only bids.** Adil Bilgi likes the niche plot of conversion vs cost because founders deciding what to build next can see which niches combine high intent with low cost.[^7]

## Disagreements / caveats
- Vendor data from a webinar selling Adapty's Apple Ads manager. Only slide highlights were spoken; no per-niche numbers were read out.
- A competitive niche can still pay: Mykola reports gen-AI advertisers scaling to ~$60K/month at ≥90% D31 ROAS ([[apple-ads-scale-ceiling]]).
- Thomas Petit distrusts most Apple Ads benchmarks because they blend brand and non-brand ([[apple-ads-brand-vs-non-brand]]). This one doesn't say whether it splits them.
