title: Do order bumps and upsells still pay on Meta? (AOV up, CAC up)
slug: aov-and-upsells-on-meta-cac
summary: Stefan Georgi's June 2026 thesis that raising front-end AOV with bumps, upsells and subscriptions roughly doubles CAC on Meta because the algorithm hunts pricier buyers — the $47-book case at 4–6x ROAS with no upsells — and how it reverses his own 2024 advice; move AOV tactics to the back end.

# Do order bumps and upsells still pay on Meta?

## TL;DR
- **Stefan's 2026 claim:** across his members' funnels (books, supplements, info, a $1K webinar offer), doubling front-end AOV on Meta roughly **doubles CAC**. AOV is "almost meaningless" on Meta.
- **Why (his theory):** Meta's algorithm stops pitching the $100 buyers and hunts the rarer, pricier $200 buyers for you, so you pay more per buyer. The old skill of persuading $100 buyers to spend $200 no longer adds margin.
- **Second, unproven theory:** a plain store looks like a reputable "book publisher" and gets better CPAs. Advertorials, bumps and upsells look like a "dirty direct-response" funnel and get taxed.
- **Practice:** if a simple product page is scaling, **change nothing**. One CA Pro member's $47 book had no bumps or upsells, spend rising 20% a day, at 4–6x ROAS.
- **Do AOV and LTV work on the back end:** post-purchase email, community, phone sales, warm offers.

## Details
**The case (June 2026).** A CA Pro member started selling a $47 physical book through ads → landing/product page, with no order bump, upsell or subscription checkbox. Their other offers, with bumps and upsells, had scaled to several million a year. Spend was rising 20% a day at 4–6x ROAS, and they asked whether to add upsells, bumps, a subscription trial or a listicle in front. Stefan Georgi's advice was none of those things: "sometimes the hardest thing to do is nothing".[^1][^2] Even if ROAS drifts down to ~2.5x as spend rises, most advertisers "would kill for that", and the market is huge.[^2]

**Mechanism, part A.** Historically a good direct-response marketer could take 100 buyers at $100 and convert 25–40% of them to $200 with copy and urgency. Now, Stefan says, Meta sees the funnel goes after $200 buyers and finds them itself, skipping the more plentiful $100 buyers. Fewer such people exist, so they cost more. He's seen it with a $1K biz-op webinar raised to $2K (CAC doubled), and with books, supplements and info offers.[^3][^4]

**Mechanism, part B ("no proof whatsoever").** He suspects Meta treats a clean product page selling one item like a book publisher and gives it a publisher CPA. Adding advertorials, A/B tests, bumps or upsells marks you as a direct-response publisher with a worse customer experience, and he thinks you pay a "tax" for it. Media buyer Ryan Skelly, on the call, agreed and said to do it on the back end.[^5]

**What changed since 2024.** In his 2024 funnel-economics training, Stefan listed AOV levers as core: package ladders, checkout order bumps ($20 add-on costing $3; $27 info add-on), and upsells taken by 20% → 40% of buyers.[^6][^7] Even then he said to test them, because a bump can hurt upsells.[^7] The 2026 position is that these tactics now belong *after* the purchase, not in front of the paid click. He frames it as "embrace reality" and dates it "as of June 18th, 2026".[^5][^8]

## Disagreements / caveats
- **Smart Marketer's Boom case** ([[aov-flagship-bundle-offer]]) roughly doubled new-customer AOV with a bundle as the *front-end* offer, while CPC held flat. That's a bundle as the main product, not a bump or upsell. It suggests the "AOV doubles CAC" effect isn't universal, or that bundles behave differently.
- **CTC's BFCM advice** pushes AOV bundles during Black Friday, when buying behaviour and auction dynamics are unusual ([[bfcm-offer-site-and-email-plan]]).
- Web2app funnels routinely use post-purchase upsells ([[web2app-upsells-and-downsells]]). Those come after the conversion event Meta optimises for, which fits Stefan's "back end" advice.
- Evidence is anecdotal from his mastermind, with no holdout. Run your own test: compare blended CAC and contribution margin, not AOV alone, before and after adding a bump.
