# Affiliate programs for subscription apps

## TL;DR
- Affiliates are paid only on sales, so the channel is **guaranteed-profitable** on spend, and creators have skin in the game.[^1][^2]
- **Commission: 15–40%** depending on app age, niche and the affiliate's reach; **start ~5 points higher** than planned. The longer commissions run, the lower the rate.[^3][^4]
- None to Run pays **20% of annual** and **20% of monthly for the first 3 months**; ~15 affiliates, most already earning.[^5]
- **Tiers**: e.g. 20% on early sales, raised to 22–25% after 3 sales in a month.[^4]
- **Track with links plus an in-app short code** (TV viewers can't click). Apple offer codes are capped and redeem outside your paywall.[^6][^7]
- **Creator-branded paywall**: "Glad Emma sent you" with her face and a **1-month trial instead of 7 days**.[^7]

## Details
**Economics experiments.**
- [[people/david-barnard]] paid an affiliate **100% of post-Apple revenue** and still profited: many viewers bought without the code, so he kept ~20–30% of the promotion's new revenue, and ~30% of annual subscribers renew, giving ~$30K the next year per $100K month. He wouldn't repeat 100% but it worked.[^8]
- He prefers a higher one-time commission to "20% forever", since perpetual deals complicate selling the app.[^4]
- Cal AI: a public in-app program paying **$10 per sale** (not per download), roughly a third of the sale, one-time ([[people/jake-castillo]]).[^9]

**Recruiting.**[^10][^11]
- Ask **returning users**; one Insert Affiliate customer got ~100 affiliates in about two days ([[people/michael-butler]]).
- [[people/mark-kennedy]]'s first 15 came from past influencer campaigns, an email list of super fans and a 13K-member Facebook group.
- Non-creator partners: races and turkey trots promoting beginner plans for a share of subscriptions.

**Content.** Best posts are "here's what I'm doing, I'm a beginner like you, follow along". Tell affiliates what *not* to do (no competitor comparisons, banned phrases) instead of scripting — scripts are obvious.[^12]

**Halo.** None to Run's Google search traffic fell as AI answers pushed results down (Mark cites ~68% of searches ending without a click). Brand-aligned affiliates posting on YouTube, Reddit and TikTok feed the sources AI answers draw on. [^12][^13] Michael has seen apps pay a creator extra to run a strong affiliate post as an ad.[^16]

**The other side: earning affiliate revenue.** WeWard, a free rewards app, earns commission promoting Nike, Adidas, Expedia, Booking.com and Amazon through affiliate platforms and direct deals. It turns away brands that clash with its wellness positioning ([[people/yves-benchimol]]).[^14][^15]

## Disagreements / caveats
- Jake: affiliate is the easiest way to align incentives. Drew Levin warns pure performance deals rarely keep *UGC* creators ([[ugc-pay-structures-and-free-views]]). Affiliates suit people who already love the app or have an aligned audience, not hired content makers.
- Evidence is mostly small programs (≈15 affiliates) and vendor claims (Insert Affiliate).
