# Why ads get clicks but no conversions

## TL;DR
- Many ads with great CTR and thumb-stop ratio fail because they have a **hook but no heart**: they grab attention without connecting it to a transformation the viewer wants[^1].
- **Hook and hand:** the hook earns attention; the conversion happens when you offer a "hand up" from where the viewer has fallen. The link between the two is the heart of the message[^2].
- The #1 reason: viewers **don't think they need your hand** — they're relaxed on the couch, not on the ground. Your job is to make them see they're on the ground[^3].
- Fix by finding the context where your buyer feels the struggle most poignantly, picking 2–3 core motivators, and showing that problem visually in the opening[^4][^5][^6].
- Then check the page side: generic page vs ad angle, missing value perception in the buy box, wrong traffic ([[ad-landing-page-message-match]], [[product-page-buy-box]], [[list-offer-copy-hierarchy]]).

## Details
**Five reasons people don't take the hand** (Ben Bennett, Smart Marketer agency — [[people/ben-bennett]])[^3][^7][^8]:
1. Not convinced they're on the ground — no felt problem.
2. Don't trust it — ad scent is off, or the explanation of *how* you help isn't convincing.
3. Want help, but not now — no urgency; relevance and offer framing fix this.
4. Getting up looks too hard — the solution sounds like too much effort.
5. Don't understand it — what you think you're saying isn't what the ad communicates.

Meet people where they are — scrolling, not shopping — and prime them to recognise the problem before showing the hand[^8].

**Three-step fix**
1. *Context exercise:* "In what situation does my avatar face the struggle I solve most poignantly?" Ben starts every brainstorm here — emotions are predictions built from context, so a vivid context produces the emotion[^4].
2. *Motivator:* pick 2–3 of the nine motivators from Will Leach's *Marketing to Mind States* (e.g. belonging, security) and tell the story through them[^5].
3. *Visual hook:* show the problem in the first seconds, in a format that fits the story[^6].

A Smart Marketer mentee's tactical-pen ads were all features; reframed as "we don't sell pens, we sell peace of mind" (security motivator), it started working immediately (anecdote)[^9]. In a live poll of Smart Marketer viewers, "clicks but no conversions" was the most common creative struggle[^10].

**Page-side causes**
- One generic page for all angles (Dose's diagnosis) — see [[ad-landing-page-message-match]][^11].
- The most common landing-page mistake Sofi sees: not enough **value perception** (review count, gift with purchase, acquisition offer) in the buy box[^12].
- Wrong list: no copy fixes the wrong traffic[^13].

## Disagreements / caveats
- Ben's framework is qualitative (agency experience, one pen anecdote). Pair it with funnel data: if add-to-cart is fine but checkout drops, the problem is the checkout, not the ad's heart.
