title: Is ad fatigue real? Creative longevity vs refresh cadence
slug: ad-fatigue-and-creative-longevity
summary: Where practitioners disagree on ad fatigue — Barry Hott has ads running profitably for years and doubts fatigue is the main killer; Savannah Sanchez says rotate in at least 2 new ads a week (TikTok fatigues fastest); CTC's data shows whales survive month to month 82% of the time and accounts that push budget on proven ads carry 85–100%+ of spend; AppLovin has fewer but higher-attention impressions — plus how to tell real fatigue from other causes.

# Ad fatigue and creative longevity

## TL;DR
- **Barry Hott:** "I don't really buy into the whole fatigue thing." He has ads that worked for years. Other factors can make an ad *look* fatigued, and the real reason teams need volume is diversity.[^1]
- **Savannah Sanchez:** on social, rotate in **at least two new ads a week** to beat fatigue, which hits fastest on TikTok.[^2]
- **Data (CTC):** about **70–75%** of spend carries into next month on existing ads. Whales survive month to month **82%** of the time. Accounts that scale budget on proven ads carry 85–100%+.[^3][^4]
- Before calling fatigue, check whether the decline is the platform (TikTok's hair-trigger), frequency, season, or a site/offer change.[^5][^6]
- The best ads are **evergreen bangers**. One ad that lasts two years is worth more than many that hit for a few weeks.[^7]

## Details
**Long-lived winners exist.** The Perfect Jean's "milk jug pulled from the pants" ad was still running a year and a half later.[^1] Barry's incentive is ads that last years, and he contrasts the "2-week winner" with the "2-year evergreen".[^7] CTC tracks *evergreen share* (ads >30 days) and *spend degradation*: one brand's surviving ads lost ~39% of spend a week, another's barely aged ([[creative-demand-formula-carry-rate]]).[^8]

**Platform differences.**
- *TikTok vs Meta:* one roundtable founder (likely Ovadia Lebaton; speakers overlap) thinks TikTok's algorithm reacts to small metric shifts with a "hair trigger" and pushes ads down faster. He believes that is algorithmic, not user boredom.[^5]
- *Then vs now:* HelloTushy's creative didn't fatigue as quickly six years ago, when "you put a dollar in and it gives you more than one back".[^9]
- *AppLovin:* full-screen ads appear only every 2–5 minutes of gameplay, so fatigue per impression is lower. But frequency inside a high-attention placement gets annoying fast, so volume and mashups still matter.[^6][^10]

**Organic vs paid novelty.** Dara Denney's organic audience wants the same three video types "over and over". Paid has to reach new pockets of people, so it needs real diversity, not "same video, different font".[^11]

**What to do with a declining ad.** First try what CTC calls "mining": revive last year's and last month's top performers, re-enable paused winners, and point old winners at new landing pages before briefing new work.[^12] Iterate by isolating one variable (new hook on the same body, same script with a new creator) to "get more life out of your top ads".[^13]

## Disagreements / caveats
- The two camps partly talk past each other. Savannah's weekly-refresh rule comes from an agency that sells weekly production. Barry and CTC talk about account-level spend carried by long-running whales. Both agree volume and diversity are needed to *find* the evergreen ads.
- Andromeda-era advice to reload "fatigued" old winners ([[meta-consolidation-vs-sprint-approach]]) supports Barry's view that fatigue is often temporary or misdiagnosed.
