title: Creative volume and hit rate — why you need dozens of ads per winner
slug: ad-creative-volume-and-hit-rate
summary: Paid social for apps is a volume game — one operator saw 1 winner per ~85 videos and ~$800k of $1.5–1.8M spend wasted; teams now ship 400+ concepts/month, test in cheap geos, and treat flat, "stable" performance as a sign they stopped searching for breakout creatives.

# Creative volume and hit rate

## TL;DR
- Expect most creatives to fail: Alex (Boost App Social) found **~1 in 85 videos** got the spend and worked; ~97% of creatives never did, however good they looked.[^1][^2]
- Budget the "tuition": of **$1.5–1.8M** lifetime Meta spend over ~2.5 years, Alex estimates **~$800k was wasted** finding winners.[^3]
- Build a production engine, not a few hero ads: Runa went from tens to **400+ concepts/month** with AI tools; Yuliya Lennox talks of **~500 ads/week** at a past company.[^4][^5]
- Test cheaply: run creative tests in geos with similar conversion but low CPMs (e.g. Indonesia) — **~$10/day instead of ~$1,000/day** in the US — then scale winners in the US.[^5]
- "Stable" results are a warning: if CPA/CPM sit flat ($30 CAC → $50 revenue), you've stopped searching. A real winner shows up as CPA halving or purchases tripling overnight.[^6][^7]
- Spend your time on creatives, not Ads Manager tinkering — post-Andromeda, Meta targets largely through the creative.[^8]

## Details
**Why the hit rate is so low.** Alex's view after scaling Boost App Social from $100/day to $10k/day: a creative must be both a *Meta match* (the algorithm predicts it will perform and pushes spend) and an *audience match*. A technically excellent ad can still bomb; he once spent ~$20k on a creative he loved that never worked "no matter how much you try to slice it".[^9][^10] Accept it as the cost of doing business — he once wasted $8k in minutes by duplicating an ad at 11:30 pm.[^3]

**How to raise volume.**
- Recruit many creators and own the footage outright so you can recut it (see [[ugc-creator-mass-outreach-and-rights]]).
- Recut each delivery: Alex turned ~5 creator videos into ~15 variants (mixing screen-recording and phone-in-hand shots, tighter cuts) — but warns against spinning "2,000 micro-variants".[^11]
- Use AI for permutations (voice, music, translation, hooks) — see [[ai-tools-for-app-ad-creatives]]. Phil Carter notes higher volume also speeds up learning about users, which feeds the product roadmap.[^4]

**Never settle.** Yuliya Lennox's lesson from BetterMe: early creatives *shouldn't* look good; keep pushing for the one concept that changes the account's economics, rather than scaling a mediocre but profitable steady state.[^6][^7]

**Where to focus effort.** Ethan Ethier (Built With Science, $0 → ~$100k/month Meta in 2026) says the biggest unlock was spending *less* time on campaign structure and bid strategies and more on better content, since targeting now happens mostly via creatives.[^8]

## Disagreements / caveats
- The 1-in-85 figure is one app's experience in a "growth-hack" category with a Meta-native audience; hit rates vary by category and by how good your briefs are.
- Testing in cheap geos assumes the audience behaves similarly; Yuliya also warns cultural differences matter (see [[international-localization-for-app-growth]]).
- Volume without a structured test (see [[paid-social-creative-testing-framework]]) just burns money faster.
